What does a oxygen sensor do?

1980 is when they started putting oxygen sensors in cars and back then they only put one in the car. 1996 is when the OBD II system came out and they started putting more sensors in the cars sometimes up to 4. There is usually one oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold itself which measures the amount of unburned oxygen. Then there is one after the catalytic converter which measures the oxygen level after its cleaned by the catalytic converter.

How do you remove a rusted bolt from an o2 sensor?

If there are specific hazards or issues with an O2 sensor then adjust these instructions accordingly.

There are four simple steps to try initially:

1) Clean up the seized fastener... use a combination of degreasers, detergents, abrasives. DON'T use wire brushes in this instance, stick with plastic. This sets things up for the next step...

2) Search for the term "penetrating lubricant". These are specially formulated to squeeze into the small spaces in fastener threads. Use the lubricant liberally. Use plastic brushes to work it in, further cleansing the area.

3) Try to rock the fastener in both directions... particularly effective if it starts to come undone then jams. Add more lube as you go... it should rock a little further each time until it frees up. if not...

4) If seized absolutely solid try a freeze and release spray... very effective and much safer than heat around delicate electrics. Check the product to ensure it is safe around electrics as this is a special situation.

You changed your o2 sensor couple days ago and now you got po133 slow response can anybody tell you what could you the problem cause your sensor is new thanks?

Could be a faulty o2 sensor. Try replacing your downstream o2 sensor. Also, it could be a bad catalytic converter. Try checking for vaccum leaks in or around the intake manifold. (O rings usually are the culprats)

Is there a picture of what a bad oxygen sensor looks like compared to a good oxygen sensor?

The outward appearance of a defective oxygen sensor is no different than the appearance of a brand new one. The components that fail are internal and cannot be repaired ... direct replacement is the only fix.

How do you know when you need an oxygen sensor?

Wow, that is a very broad question! Sometimes I wish I could connect my laptop to my truck and it tell me exactly what to replace--dream on, right?

I just replaced the O2 sensor on my 1991 Nissan truck. I changed it for several reasons:

irratic idle (sometimes very fast, rough, or very low)

outrages gas consumption!! I can literally watch the needle lay down... :( , remember, this truck has a four banger...I say can because AFTER I changed it, gas use is still unchanged (this broke my heart). I used a 1 meter cheater bar on it to loosen it, then the base and 02 sensor came out together with the threads looking like butter on both..02 nightmare!

surging on take off (the truck bucked a little once the light turned green)

engine light comes on (this is one of many reasons why that bothersome little red eye winks at you)

Good luck, whomever posted this question..I hope this at least gets you started.

Signs of a bad oxygen sensor?

Low gas milege is an indication of a bad oxygen sensor and/or it's wiring. A lack of power, increasing vibration in car's floor and cabin area(s), high RPM's at highway speeds.
