What can cause a missed period?

Many things can have an effect on your period being delayed

The following are some of the things (apart from being pregnant, of course) that can have an effect on your period being delayed: mental/physical stress; weight loss/gain; your contraception; infections; and invisible bleeding (which leads you to believe that you have have missed your period).

If your period is late after having had unprotected sex, I recommend taking a home-pregnancy test; you can buy them now to test up to 6 days before you are due. If, however, you have not had unprotected sex, you should see your GP; it's probably nothing to worry about, and around 85% of people have experienced a late period at least once in their life. To be on the safe side, and to put your mind at ease, visit your doctor.

How long does it take sperm to reach an egg?

According to WebMD, the fastest sperm can get to a fallopian tube is about 30 minutes, meaning that the quickest conception could occur following sex is in the half-hour range . This means that, following sex, the egg could be fertilized before you've gotten up to get a drink of water.

According to Harms, conception can occur as many as five days after sex or possibly longer, as strong, healthy sperm can survive for about that many days (and perhaps even longer) in the supportive environment of the fallopian tubes as they wait for an egg to be released, if one isn't already present. Here's how it works: Fertilization happens in one of the fallopian tubes, which carries an egg from an ovary to the uterus. It can take up to seven days after intercourse for sperm and egg to join and become a fertilized egg. Usually, it's because the sperm gets into the fallopian tube before the egg is released.

Here is more from Answers.com contributors:

  • I would say at least a couple of hours, but it could take up to three days. Depending you your body and where the egg is in the cycle.
  • The sperm that will be able to fertilize the egg will leave the cervix, at the most, 30 minutes. It does not take 3 days for the sperm to get to the fallopian tubes to ovulation. It can take minutes for at least some of the sperm to reach the fallopian tubes where they are stored waiting for the egg to pop out if it hasn't already popped out.
  • As a general rule, less than three days.
  • Well from what the Doctor told me when I got pregnant, it can take anywhere from the moment it happened to 8 days after the moment. Sorry if that doesn't help any just what I was told.
  • I don't know the answer, but I will tell you what I do know. Sperm travels about 1/8 inch per minute. Sounds pretty slow until you realize Sperm is about 1/600 inch long. If you scale that up to "human" size that's about 4-5 miles / hour -- slow jogging speed. The penetration of the penis and location of the egg in the fallopian tubes is only two factors that will affect time. Not all sperm swim in the correct direction. Some "hang back" and may not move into the fallopian tubes for 2 or 3 days. This is why you can have intercourse before ovulation and still get pregnant by sperm from a few days ago.
  • Sperm can last 3 to 5 days inside a woman. Every woman ovulates differently. People will tell you the average woman ovulate 14 days from the day you start your period
  • It takes about two hours to make the entire journey to the egg; however, some sperm are Olympic swimmers and can reach the egg in a half an hour. If no egg is available to fertilize, the sperm swim around patiently waiting to bump into one. Because there is no chemical or physical attraction of the sperm for the egg, the sperm literally must bump into the egg.
  • Straight from the professionals it is instantenious, as soon as the sperm gets inside it happens as quick and clapping your hands.

    Yes, there is a chemical attraction to the egg, the egg has a protein sperm swim towards.

  • Within three hours after intercourse. And they die off after three days..unless of course your taking birth control or the morning after pill.

Could a short period mean you might be pregnant?

  • Maybe you are not pregnant since you already had your period for 3 days. Your shorter cycle and the symptoms you are feeling now could have been triggered by stress or maybe some sort of hormonal imbalance. But of course it's still important for you to see your doctor just to make sure. There are a few occurrences wherein the menses would occur and find out later on that she is pregnant.
  • You could still be pregnant. It runs in my family to have implantation bleeds. That's where you bleed because you are pregnant and it's a long explanation. It's always safe to check. That's why they always ask for your last NORMAL menstrual period.
  • Not necessarily. If you are on a low dosage birth control pill such as ortho tricyclen lo, it is very likely that your period will be shortened or might not happen at all. Take a pregnancy test just in case, but you probably have nothing to worry about if you are practicing safe sex.
  • As someone else said, the question is "your last "normal" period." I have been pregnant three times (and have 3 wonderful children). I had no bleeding with the first two but bled for 9 days with the third; it was 'different' than a normal period. Turns out it was implantation bleeding.
  • Yes, you can be pregnant even if you have a short or light period. I had a period that lasted 7 days but was extremely light, I was pregnant....8 months later I gave birth.

Conception Dates

How do you figure out the date of conception to know if you are the father?

If your girlfriend doesn't know the conception date, I don't think there's really any way anyone could tell you.

Even a baby's due date or actual delivery date offers no real clue as to the exact date of conception.

You might try the conception calculator linked under more info in the right column.

You can always get a DNA test, or you can trust your girlfriend and love the baby as your own any way.

A women generally ovulates 14-18days after the first day of her last menstrual period. If you know the first day of your last menstrual period then you can estimate the week conception occurred.

Given that sperm can live for days within the women, during the conception date may be difficult. If a women has sex on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with three different men, any of them can be the father.

Set your mind at ease and get a DNA test.

You really won't be able to pinpoint the exact date. you can find aproximately by knowing the day her last period started and how long her cycles are. It would be an aproximation though.

Hopefully you are still on good terms with your girlfriend, if you should attend the doctor visits, then one thing is of great help, when the first ultrasound is given, hopefully before the 11th week, there is a measurement that is given called a crown rump length, this is very very accurate in telling the gestational age of the child. after the 13th week, the baby is able to curl so the accuracy is not there, the spinal segements have formed. Crown rump length will give you a very accurate date. Good Luck. I hope everything works out for you.

Does a brown blood period while on the pill indicate pregnancy?

no i would say not. i was on the camila pill, a pill with only progesterone in it, and i got the same thing. i was on the pill for about seven months and that happened starting after about a month. my doctor said that might happen due to hormonal changes in my body/ More input from FAQ Farmers: * Nah... I wouldn't worry about it. I was on the pill for about 10 years and would occasionally have this. My doctor said it was just old blood. If you are really worried about it, see your OBGYN! * Not necessarily. I just went through it. It is common if you have just started taking the pill. You can potentially have brown blood for three months while your body adjusts. Or if you have missed a couple if pills you can have "break through" bleeding that will occur prior to your actual period. Give a quick call to your doc and they will explain it. I have recentlty learned that its quite common.

If you get a period while pregnant how does it differ from your regular menses?

It differs from your regular menses in that it isn't your period at all. You cannot have a period and be pregnant at the same time by the very biological definition and function of the two.

Think about it.

Any bleeding you experience during a pregnancy is referred to as "vaginal bleeding" and it is caused by something other than your period.

Visit the related question below for a lot more information on this very topic as well as possible causes and what you should do about it.

What should you do after intercourse to increase your chances of getting pregnant?

AnswerFrom studies and understandings of the philosophy surrounding sperm cell anatomy and physiology, female's reproductive system, the anatomy and physiology of the cervix, I want to say that the best way to ease fertilization or even cause fertilization by some reluctant and weak sperm cells is to assist them move towards their target (the egg) right in the uterus. By advising your female partner to tilt her lower part to an angle close to 50-70o (i.e, buttocks and legs up), you increase this chance. Being in this position for about 30 minutes under the support of the male partner can be a good attempt. In this position the sperm cells will move faster than normal hence certainly reaching their target within 72 hours. As a scientist, my next target is even to modify this principle by causing sperm cells to cross the cervix faster than we can ever think. Thanks

Do not use lubricants, as they are not "sperm-friendly". Also, prop your rear end on a pillow immediately after intercourse and lay there as still as possible for 20 minutes.

Is bleeding mid-cycle a symptom of pregnancy?

  • It can be a sign of pregnancy. Sometimes light bleeding or spotting occurs mid-cycle due to implantation of the egg into the lining of the uterus.
  • A young woman up to the age of 17 may have 3 months of missed periods simply because she hasn't reached her maturity level physically. Also stress can cause an "extra period" or missed periods. Going on birth control pills or patches can also change your cycle. It's best to see your doctor and let him/her decide what is going on.

Can you use a home pregnancy test more than once?

Certainly...but not the same one! You have to buy a new one. To ensure the best results: * Take the test in the morning, if possible, because your hCG (pregnancy hormone) levels are at it's highest * Don't drink a bunch of fluids before taking the test because it will dilute your urine and can affect the results * Take the test no more than 1-2 days before expected period. Although some test say that you can see results up to 5 days before your missed period, the percentage of accuracy is very low. * urinate for as long as possible on the foam-like strip * wait for the results!

What might cause frequent irregular periods?

Frequent Irregular Periods

I am not a doctor, but this is from a website - can I recommend that you see your doctor? Abnormal bleeding (either heavy bleeding or bleeding between periods) can have many causes. Bleeding can occur from the vagina secondary to trauma, infection or cancer, and can be diagnosed with cultures, pap smear or actual visualization of a lesion. The cervix can bleed abnormally also secondary to fibroids, infection, polyps or cancer, as is the case with the uterus. Ovarian and other estrogen producing tumors can also cause abnormal uterine bleeding. I?m sure you noticed that cancer appeared several times in this list. Although it must be ruled out, it is not the usual diagnosis with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Here are more answers from other FAQ Farmers:

  • Irregular periods can also be a sign of endometriosis. This is a nagging condition that can cause dull pain (like mild menstrual cramps) or intense pain (like being jabbed with a knife). It can also cause irregular bleeding, pain during and after sex and pain with urination. Mention it to your physician if the symptoms persist.

IT CAN BE BECAUSE OF POLYMENORRHAGIA . SOME WOMEN WITH PCOD SUFFER WITH THIS. AND IT MAY BE A SIGN OF MENOPAUSE OR ENDOMETRYOSIS OR TUMOURS.

There are many factors which are responsible for irregular periods:

  • A woman can have irregular periods due to significant weight loss or weight gain;
  • Over exercise can also result in irregular menstruation;
  • In some cases increased stress is cause of irregular menstruation;
  • Poor nutrition and diet which is rich in carbohydrates is also related to hormonal imbalance and menstrual disturbances;
  • Some drugs can also cause irregularities in menstruation;
  • Many women who are smokers experience irregular periods;
  • Some eating disorders like bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa also cause menstrual cycle irregularities.

Can you tell if you are pregnant after two weeks without taking a pregnancy test?

No, the only way to tell for sure if you are pregnant is to take a test. 2 weeks after sex the egg have just attached itself to the uterus wall so symptoms are not there yet.

Can a woman ovulate twice before her next period?

Yes, a woman can ovulate twice during her menstrual cycle but it would still be during the ovulation phase of her menstrual cycle. A woman cannot just randomly ovulate, her menstrual cycle controls when she ovulates - typically women will ovulate two weeks before menstruation.

To correct a previous answer: Orgasm does not cause ovulation, that's not biologically possible.

Can you take a pregnancy test after just one week?

Pregnancy TestNo, you need to wait until at LEAST 4 days before your missed period. If you wait until you miss your period, you will have a better chance of a true result. and my advice would be to take a Digital, as they read the lines for you, and tell you Pregnant or Not Pregnant.

Can you take a home pregnancy test before you miss your period?

Yes, you can. I took a pregnancy test 4 days before my expected period, (in the middle of the day) its positive, took another test one hour later, its positive again. And I took another one the next day, it turns out positive as well(Its kind of fun to take the test once its positive )

Yes, you can. There are a few tests on the market that allow you to take the test four days before your missed period. I believe that there are also one or two that you can take even earlier. They are stronger when detecting your hormone count. The one that I know you can use four days before your period is due is " " - I used it and it worked fine (I am not two months pregnant). But as with all tests, they are not guaranteed, so if you take one I would suggest taking another one when your period is due. " " comes in a two pack (more for your money!). Good luck!

I took a e.p.t before I missed my period too and it came out negative and I know for sure I have to be pregnant because my partner told me he is sure. But I would like for a pregnancy test that can tell from the day of conception because I am a teen and i really need to know.

The answer to this question is actually "yes," and that's with a normal pregnancy test. Tests generally claim that they become accurate from the first day of the woman's missed period. This information is accurate, because the woman generally starts her period about two weeks after ovulation.

It is the length of time that the woman is pregnant that determines if the test comes back positive or not. This is important for those with highly irregular menstrual cycles, or for those who engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse during the woman's period (since it would kind of suck to have to wait an entire month to test).

It is recommended to take a home pregnancy test about 14 days after sexual intercourse. If you are still concerned, it is a good idea to retest a few days later. .

My husband and I were trying to have a baby and I took a pregnancy test 5 days before my period was due and I was pregnant.

At 4'10 and 89 pounds is it bad to gain 10 pounds and weigh 97 pounds after a couple of days away on vacation eating a lot - is this now overweight?

If you are 4' 10" and now 97 lbs I would say that you are overweight but I am not certain because I don't know your body fame and body composition. I am 13, 5' 4" and weight about 97lbs. However, with exercise and eating healthier (cliche, I know) you will easily lose the weight gained.

Can you delay your period?

Yes, you can delay menstruation by taking medication like Norethisterone.

Norethisterone is essentially a synthetic progesterone so started three days before menstruation it prevents the progesterone drop that would normally trigger menstruation to begin. This drug is normally prescribed by a doctor and you take it three times per day from three days before your period, you continue to take it until you want your period to start. Menstruation will normally occur within around 48 hours of stopping the pills, it can be heavier but that isn't always the case.

Can you still be pregnant even after you get your period?

Here are some personal experiences:

I was one month pregnant and I had my period the next month. While my mother was pregnant with me she had all her periods except the last three months.

After having what I thought was a normal 6-7 day period at my regular level of flow, I had a surprise miscarriage earlier this year. It happened on what I thought was the 18th day of my cycle (but I was actually 6 weeks pregnant.) We had been trying to conceive for about 6 months, and it was the first cycle in which I hadn't taken a pregnancy test on the morning my period was due. To save money, I made myself wait to see if my period was "late" before taking the test. Since I got what looked like a normal period, I never used the test. Now I test every time! It's 4 months later and we are still trying, now seeing a specialist!

They say 'when you miss a period that this is a sign that you are pregnant' this is not always the case. I have had three pregnancies, including one live birth and one lost. The first pregnancy I had two periods with, the second pregnancy I had four periods with and this pregnancy I had the first two. It's always tough to know as well because tests will say negative if you are still having a period.

Doctors would disagree, but I had 5 periods when pregnant with my last child. Yes, the normal (for me) 35 day cycle, and 10 day bleeding. The doctors will tell you "you can't get your period while ovulating" yet MANY women have occasional (or even frequent) cycles without ovulation. I also have endometriosis, so may have had something to do with it. I was told by a doctor my endo wouldn't "grow" or bother me while pregnant. He was wrong, too.

If you are pregnant will you still get cramps around the time your period is due?

Sore breasts and cramps are both common in the early stages of pregnancy, so if you are in doubt, get a pregnancy test, it's the only way to know for sure, and it's not reliable until you are at least two weeks late for your period.

I am about 6 weeks pregnant for the first time, and I'm a nurse. It is normal to have sore breasts and many times this will last for the first trimester and sometimes longer as your hormones are changing, also having cramps monthly can be normal too, because your body is use to having periods monthly, so my doctor says that you might have those feelings of cramps every month, just not the bleeding.
