Does Spanish fly work?

There is a real product called Spanish fly, but whether it works depends to what extent and how you define it working. It is NOT safe for use in humans. The active ingredient is cantharadin, an irritant/blistering agent. It causes an irritation of the urethra (the tube through which urine and semen pass) which can be mistaken for sexual stimulus. However, ask anyone who's had a urinary tract infection whether that was sexually stimulating! In larger doses it can KILL a person.

Spanish Fly is used in the mating of bulls to induce sexual excitement in the *animal*. Professional breeders might use this from time to time--however, it can seriously injure or kill a human, so it's use as an aphrodisiac in humans is mostly a myth.

To the original question -- define "work"! Does sending someone to the emergency room with kidney damage count as working? Since it is used in inducing bulls to mate, so in some sense it "works". And it has a long history of usage for the purpose -- but imagine now that the act is done -- and the irritation does not turn off! Does that count as "work"?

Acidum Aceticum, U.S.P., contains 36 per cent. by weight of absolute acetic acid, and has a specific gravity of 1.045 at 25°. Action and Uses.-Acetic acid is oxidised in the body and is excreted in the urine as carbonate; it is, therefore, mildly diaphoretic, diuretic, and expectorant. It is administered in mixtures in the form of the diluted acid, or as oxymel, or oxymel of squill. Applied externally, it has an irritant action, and it is therefore used in liniments. How do you make pharmaceutical ointment?

Ointments are made through three methods:

  • Fusion Method:
    • Used to combine components of different consistencies, some are hard and some are soft, all the components are fatty compounds.
    • Some or all of the ointment components are combined together by melting, mixing, then continuously stirring them until congealing.
    • If the medicament is a soluble solid, it is added to the warm base after melting and then is stirred till a homogenous solution is obtained. If it is insoluble, it is stirred with a sufficient amount of a levigating agent of similar nature to the base, then added to the mixture and stirring till obtaining a homogenous solution.
  • Trituration Method:
    • Used to combine components of similar consistencies, all the base components are soft and fatty.
    • All the ointment components are mixed on cold till a uniform mixture is obtained.
    • If the medicament is insoluble in the base, then it is added in the same way it is added in the fusion method of ointment preparation
  • Emulsification Method:
    • Used when some of the ointment components are of aqueous nature and others are of fatty nature, sometimes the medicament as well is soluble in water.
    • All the fatty compounds are added and melted together, stirred till a uniform mixture is obtained.
    • All the water soluble compounds are dissolved in water (sometimes including the drug itself), then the solution is heated roughly to the same temperature as the hot fatty mixture or higher.
    • Then the two portions are mixed and stirred vigorously till the product sets.
N.B: If the aqueous liquid is added while its cold, it will cause rapid congealing before emulsification takes places and the product formed will be lumpy.

Cardiovascular disease is a huge killer.....therefore, it makes sense that pharmaceutical companies make products to help cure diseases that affect the most people. High blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol are probably the two largest risk factors for CV disease. I don't think I would make the leap and say that treating cholesterol is 'more profitable' than say, treating BP, depression, infections, or GERD. GERD was the number one prescribed disease state in the world, before the statins came out....I would say the profit margins are quite similar between all mainstream drugs on the market. Currently it costs a drug company close to 900 million to get a drug to market....if they don't make profits on something, how would we get new medicine? The government throught the NIH hasn't come out with a novel new medicine in years and years. One drug company just recently stopped development of a product just before it came to market because a problem was detected....they had almost 1 billion (whoa!) invested. I don't mind paying a little extra for my cholesterol meds, if they can find a treatment for my parkinsons. Todays medicines are funding tomorrows miracles.
