Not much information is available on the Internet about the Single Parent Food, and some that is available is not favorable.
Though it has not been verified, they say on their site that they are "a registered non-profit organization effective October 26, 1996 under the BC Society Act #S34387 and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Business #845205269." According to some information, that registration may have been revoked.
This organization has been the source of controversy and cannot be confirmed as a valid non-profit organization; however, none of the usual indicators of it being a scam were found in search engine searches.

The Single Parent Food Bank of B.C. Society is registered with the Society Act of British Columbia as a non profit organization, we are a registered Society in good standing with the Register of Companies Society Division. ( registered Oct 26 1995 -- our certificate of incorporation number is -- S-34387 ) (we have and can provide our Society Annual Report that shows we are up to date with our documentation) So when you have posted The Certificate of incorporation shown by the canvassers is dated 1995 and is not proof that there is a current registration.
that is incorrect the document shows the date of incorporation but the document is the societies Annual report which is dated 2011/01/01 as the date of our filling with the Government agency, and it is stamped by the Agency Filed and registered Jan 20 2011, the previous year it was filled 2010/01/04 and received by the registar of companies Jan 24th 2010,
...We are also registered With Canada Revenue Agency as a non profit Society effective 1995-10-26 and our registration number is 84520 5269 RC0001 and we have filed up to date our T 1044 E Non Profit Organization (NPO) Information Return which is available upon request.
That's why when you look under the CRA website it shows that no Registered charity exists with that name because we are listed as a NPO society.
We have however filled the paper work for registering this Society with Charities Directorate Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Ottawa and received confirmation of that application with a file number and dated letter from the agency Oct 25th 2010 and we are in the process of providing the additional information they have requested to complete our application.

Charities give help and support to families that have people that are ill like cancer research. they give money to hospitals so that they can give treatment to cure them not nesciceraly cure them but help them get better.

Community service has always been around. It really started to get big in the 1900s.
