Polar Bears

Known scientifically as Ursus Maritimus, the polar bear is native to the Arctic Circle, and is the world's largest carnivore species found on land. It is classified as a vulnerable species, with 5 of the`9 polar bear subpopulations in decline. They have a reputation as the only animal that actively hunts humans, but in fact, anything they encounter is potential prey.

Do polar bears hunt for food by themselves or in herds?

These shy animals prefer to live and hunt alone, spending much of their lives in trees. Males and females come together only during mating season. Red pandas are most active while foraging for food in the morning and evening. During the day they can be found relaxing in tree branches or fallen logs.

Why is a polar bear a marine mammal?

It is considered a Marine Mammal;

Closely related to bears like the grizzly, polar bears are actually considered to be marine mammals since they have characteristics that have adapted them for a marine lifestyle. They obtain almost all of their food from the ocean. They are streamlined for swimming, which allows for agility and endurance for long stays in the water. They even have tiny webs between their toes to help them swim. Also, polar bears have what no other bears have, a layer of blubber that keeps them warm while swimming in the cold Arctic seas.

Do polar bears have balls?

Right whales don't have teeth or horns or claws to prevent the other males from mating with the female, so they have developed an interesting way to compete called "sperm competition."

Each male produces massive amounts of sperm in an attempt to dilute other sperm that might already be in the female. To do this, the whales need the appropriate plumbing, which explains why one southern right whale testicle weighs in at over 500 kg (1,100 lbs), making the right whale the animal with the biggest testicles. At 1% of the whale's total body weight, this size is very large even taking into account the size of the whale. Right whales can grow up to 18 m (60 feet) long and weigh up to 100 tons.

so yes they do! :3

How are polar bears being helped?

yes, they are being hunted because their numbers are still growing.

Can polar bears survive warm weather?

Well, sort of. Keeping warm requires energy, and to get energy the bear needs to eat. If it doesn't get food it'll eventually die of exposure. But a healthy, well-fed bear can stand pretty much any naturally occurring cold temperature.

What kind of adaptations do polar bears have to live in the Arctic?

* Polar bears are protected with two layers of fur, as well as a 4.5 Inch layer of blubber. http://www.polarbearsinternational.org/faq/#q6 * These mammals have small, compact ears, that prevent heat loss through their ears. A contrary example to this would be camels. They have large ears, that help heat loss. http://www.polarbearsinternational.org/faq/#q6 * A small tail helps prevent heat loss, through means of their tails. http://www.polarbearsinternational.org/faq/#q6 * Polar bears have small, padded claws, to help cling on to ice.

What are you doing to understand the polar bears?

I read about their plight, and make my judgments on what I read. The polar bear, for one thing, is not an endangered species. In fact, their numbers are more or less stable. Add to that the polar ice cap is not melting, but growing, and I think the great bear will be around for some time.

Why do polar Bears live in the Polar Zone?

polar bears live in the north pole because the north pole is cold and polar bears can trap warmth in their skin

Why do polar bears live at the North and South Poles?

There are no polar bears at the South Pole.

Every animal makes its home where it can survive, with food, shelter and water.

What do polar bears eat besides seals?

Mature bears tend to eat only the calorie-rich skin and blubber of the seal, whereas younger bears consume the protein-rich red meat. Polar bears have also been observed to eat a wide variety of other wild foods, including muskox, reindeer, birds, eggs, rodents, shellfish, crabs, and other polar bears. They may also eat plants, including berries, roots, and kelp, however none of these are a significant part of their diet.

Why are polar bears struggling to survive in the desert?

A desert is not good for a polar bear because it can't help it live. For example polar bears eat fish and other animals so if they lived in the desert it would be most likely that they wouldn't be able to find food and soon enough they would be extinct. Hope I helped :)

ANS2:That question presumes that polar bears don't do just fine in a desert...The frozen wastelands of the north are a form of desert because they have little liquid precipitation and plant life is scarce. Polar bears aren't found in any large numbers in other habitats.

cause it is to cold for them

How do polar bears keep warm in the cold?

Two of the physical adaptations that help polar bears stay warm in cold climates are the fact that their fur is translucent and their skin is black. That's right! Fur that is translucent and skin that is black!

Lets discuss this!

Polar Bear fur is not white. They have so much fur so close together per square centimeter that when you look at it it only looks white. If you actually took one of the polar bears fur and held it up to a light or under a microscope that the light will more or less shine through it.

Now why is the fur translucent? That relates to the fact that the radiant light energy of the sun need to penetrate to the black skin of the polar bear to keep the the animal warm in cold climate conditions.

The second part of the answer to the question relates to the fact that the skin of a polar bear is black. As you know on a hot day if you touch the an item that is black or dark in colour that it will be significantly warmer than a light coloured item. If you have never observed this, next time you see a dark coloured car and a light coloured car walk up to them and touch their surfaces. You will observe that the dark coloured car is actually warmer than the light coloured car. The reason for this is because dark items absorb more of the sun's energy and light items reflect more of the energy.

The same holds true for our polar bears' skin. When the sun's energy penetrates the translucent hairs of the polar bear the sun's energy strikes the skin and the absorbed energy will help the polar bear stay warm in cold climate conditions of the arctic.
