vote for their leader
The answer to this question goes to the very different views that each ideology has as to the proper role of government in society.
In general, a conservative ideology opposes intrusion of government into aspects of personal affairs and commerce. It adheres to the view that individuals know that which is best for themselves, and armed with adequate information, can make the best decisions as to their own lives.
Likewise, they believe that since government does not have the ability to create wealth, the only way that it can financially benefit groups of people is by confiscating wealth from other groups of people and redistributing it. This is done through the police power of the state; stated otherwise, by taxation. One way to look at welfare, or at least the financing of it, is as such a redistribution. Many conservatives believe that giving money through welfare weakens the drive and sullies the ambition of the recipient.
Many conservatives further believe that people are essentially good and giving, and that charity and other private auspices will care for those in need. This voluntarism is consistent with the fact that another person, however needy, does not have a right or claim to the property of another unless the latter chooses to offer help.
By and large, liberals argue that government should take a far more paternal approach and "take care" of those whom they deem to be in need. They tend to emphasize less the private property rights of individuals, and tend to emphasize more the view that people should be on a more level playing field, at least economically. They are far more willing to use the police powers of government to achieve those goals.
As to the government bailout of financial institutions, some conservative favor it and some oppose it, and the same is true of liberals. It can be viewed as a monumental injection of government into the private sector, and as a wrongful and artificial correction of what had been very poor business practices. The price that is paid for the bailout is a growing presence of the government in the financial marketplace--rather like the elephant getting its head into the tent.

What are the main reasons why the US has a two party system today?
The main reason for having just two parties is the way the President is elected. In order to avoid having the House decide the election, one candidate has to get a majority of the electoral votes. With three parties or more parties splitting the votes, it would be really hard for one party to get this majority. So, the opposition tends to try to combine all the opposing views in order to get the majority votes.
How is it possible for a country to be democratic but not a republic?
The word "democracy" comes from the Greek meaning "rule by the people" or power to the people and the word "Republic" comes from the Latin meaning "of public affairs;" so they are so close in original source as to be hard to separate except by degrees.
Republics can vary in considerable ways in regards to how the country is run. Basically, as long as the country is not a Monarchy it is a Republic. Monarchies can have democratic elements and be more and more democratic to the point where the Monarch is a figurehead or performs the role of President in a Parliamentary form of government. One way this situation is described is as a "Constitutional Monarchy" wherein a written constitution describes limits on the monarchy and expresses powers to the citizenry.
Economic collapse due to failure of current monetary systems as well as gross national indebtedness largely due to the weight of entitlements and various other types of social programs. We are seeing this throughout Europe with the exception of Germany. America is well on it's way. This phenominon has the potential to vastly weaken national economies worldwide. The United States has the most to lose since our standard of living is higher than any other country. Instability bred by world wide economic collapse, or deep depression, will require the U.S to act militarily at a time it can least afford to due to it's own economic problems.
