France is actually a very geographically diverse country. It has a nice large, fairly flat basin that extends inward from the Atlantic. However, the eastern and southern borders of France are mountainous, with the Pyrenees to the south and Alps to the east.

I am Portuguese and have never heard this, so I still sustain it has no motto...

A maritime route to the spices they produced there. The ground route was dominated by cartels and made for rough travelling, risking getting robbed. By ship (or Nau), they could carry much larger quantities.

It depends on what you consider famous. There are a lot of famous people in Portugal, but they might be only famous in our country.

The King Juan Carlos of Spain used to live in Portugal too.

After he made the first trip around the southern tip of Africa, Bartolomeu Dias named it the "Cape of Storms". King John of Portugal later renamed it the "Cape of Good Hope" to signify it's importance as a new, shorter trade route to Asia.
