Anyone can get addicted to smoking. You wouldn't think so considering the difficulty one experiences when beginning the habit. As I recall, there was a lot of coughing, spitting, burning, dizziness, upset stomach, etc.; but if we persist, we can achieve addiction. Ah! the power of peer pressure and the need to be accepted.

And for years we happily burn up perfectly good money every day when we purchase the demon weed. And the little cough, etch, etch, that invariably goes with it.

Eventually, some of us come to our senses after burning away $40,000 or $50,000. Then comes the unthinkable; we decide to quit! Oh! The humanity!

Quitting tobacco products has sired a whole new industry. There are now patches, gums, hypnosis, acupuncture, to names a few methods to help you to quit. But when it comes down to it, there are two methods of quitting: tapering off, and cold turkey. I've tried both.

Tapering off only prolongs the agony of withdrawal and for me, at least, didn't work. I tried this method several times without success.

So, on 27 June 1972 at 4:15 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time, I quit cold turkey.

For three weeks I walked around in a haze ranging from agony for the first few days, to moderate discomfort near the end. But I beat the physical addiction.

Of course, the psychological addiction lasted for about 10 years. But the psychological addiction had no real power over me. I'd just have a random thought pop into my head that I'd like a cigarette. And I'd just as easily dismiss it. Or I'd wake up from a dream feeling ashamed of myself because I'd smoked a cigarette, only to realize that it was just a dream. heh!

I've had food poisoning multiple times. So much so that I stopped eating beef and as a result have never had it again. And that was 6 years ago. The length of vomiting will depend on the severity of your food poisoning. With mild food poisoning and you should just vomit once or twice. Your body wants to get rid of the poison and with mild poisoning will do so in about a day. Severe is when you are vomiting every time you consume water and lasts for 2 days or more. So it can last a day or it can last longer again, depending on the severity and how strong the bacteria is. If you are sick for more than 2 days I would consider calling your doctor.

A simple experiment to show voltage as ultimately harmless is to track across carpet then touch metal. The shock that you receive from this can easily exceed 12,000 Volts, and can be in the high 20's. There is no real current to this shock though, and the duration of exposure is also negligible. Current is the amount of charge that passes through a plane, where as voltage represents the difference of potential energy between source and its ground (you in this case would be the path to ground). Current is roughly equivalent to Voltage divided by resistance. Meaning the higher resistance is, the lower the current which is harmful product. Your house (in the United States) provides 110-117VAC at 60 Hz to all of your outlets. What you need to look at here is the 60 Hz. Because 60 Hz so closely matches the pace of the heart, this frequency is HIGHLY dangerous, as when the current passes your heart it can cause fibrilation. Now, if you have ever done any household electric work, you have likely touched a hot wire before and been fine. Most outlets and sources still do not have a ton of current through them. Also, the sudden shock causes you to jolt back minimizing the duration and protecting the heart. Were you to grab and hold on to these wires, you would likely die from it. In avionics, I know that 400 Hz frequency is generally used, and this is far safer to work with, as it is far less likely to cause fibrilation. Higher current sources though will still cook a person in a matter of seconds. With all of this in mind, your question asks what is the lowest amount of volts that can kill you. Because resistance of each persons body is different, the amount of current produced from a voltage source will differ depending on who is touching it, and how they are exposed to it. Were a small child to latch on to an active AC source with even 30-40 Volts, it could be deadly (fibrilation can still occur at lower voltages and cause death). For DC, the voltage would be approximately the same, but the primary path of the current would have to be through the body to be dangerous at all. For an adult, you would be looking at 40-50 Volts.

Scientific studies have not shown that mobile phone radiation does cause sickness or cancer. More powerful radiation than mobile phones, like the radiation from nuclear power plant accidents, damages the DNA in the cells and leads to cancer and other related diseases.

There is supposed to be some kind of electric current that is emmanated from a cell phone when it is in use that could potentially ignite the vapors from gas.

I saw a TV show that actually tested this hypothesis, the Myth Busters. In a controlled experiment, they put an open container in a closed box with a cell phone with a 'live connection'. The phone never did ignite the fuel. I see a lot of people yapping away at the gas station while their pumping gas. I've never heard of anyone actually starting a fire this way. But apparently someone believes this can happen because there are warning signs at all the gas stations to not do this!

Reason 2: Talking on a phone can cause a distraction. He/she who is pumping fuel may spill it either on themselves or on the ground. Since petrol vapours are extremely flammable, the slightest spark (from static electricity from your clothes or from the starting of an engine) can ignite the fuel. This has been proven.

The reason you're not allowed to use a mobile phone in a petrol station is that it might interfere with the electronics that measure the fuel and report to the cash desk. There's a general ban on using electrical equipment while fuelling because of the risk of a spark, but a mobile phone is unlikely to cause one.
