Styles of delivery vary, of course, but in general, conversational speech that is pleasant to listen to and easy to understand runs about 100 to 125 words a minute. In a speech before a group, you will want to leave time for pauses that highlight your points and for occasional short, silent moments when you hope that the audience will think a bit about what you have said.

Because you will not either memorize or read your speech -- you will speak from brief, carefully prepared notes, won't you? -- you will need time to consider precisely how you want to phrase your next thought.

Those techniques, and other time-consuming techniques that you must have studied, will make your speech sound conversational and directed to the members of the audience, not "canned."

After you have prepared your notes, practice the speech aloud, several times, as though an audience were present; and time it. Try to have a timepiece in view at show-time so that you can track your control of the assigned window.

Writing dialogue is not as hard as you're letting it seem. You have dialogue all the time -- it's called talking. If you honestly cannot think of what your characters are going to say to one another, you need to go take a break and go somewhere out in public. Sit somewhere in the middle of a crowd for one to two hours and just listen to people talking. Then, go home and write down some of the things you heard people saying. That's dialogue.

Surely you've attended some sort of birthday celebration -- you already know what things would go on and what people would talk about.

When you need to have your characters talk, just pretend it's you and a friend (or several friends), and have them say something you'd probably say in the same situation. Then imagine what your friends would say in reply, and go back and forth that way. As you become a better writer, your characters themselves will "tell" you what they want to say, because they become like real people to you.

Noise affects communication by somehow altering the message. In a very basic model of communication, a message has to pass from the receiver to the recipient through a channel (like the air, television, a printed page, etc.).

Noise is something that interferes with the transmission of the message through the channel. An easy way to think of this is to picture static on a TV. The static is the noise that interferes with the transmission of the TV program through the channel of your cable box or satellite dish. This makes it difficult to understand the message sent by the TV program; you may not hear what someone on TV says correctly, and so misinterpret what they say, for example.

Noise doesn't necessarily have to be something external that affects the channel. It can also be something internal to the recipient that affects how they receive the message. An example of this is if someone is in a bad mood. Being in a bad mood makes you more likely to interpret other people's messages as negative or hostile; the noise of your emotion affects how you see what they're trying to communicate.

You would have to consider the various aspects of this situation. The exam may be hard or easy; you might be facing it with fear or with confidence; you may be planning to study, or you may not want to bother; you may care about your grades or you may not care; you may have a close relationship with your friend, or a distant relationship; you might take a competitive attitude (I'm going to do better on the exam than you are) or a cooperative attitude (help me study for the exam). Once you have an idea of the details of the situation, you can easily imagine the kind of dialogue that would fit in that situation.
