Why did the terrorists of 911 choose planes?
Their goal was to blow up the Twin Towers and they knew that a attempt in any other way would fail. Blowing up the towers from the base had all ready been tried and it failed. The use of planes by the 19 Saudi men had been explored for several years ( it came up in the Clinton administration) and it was a weak point in the defense of the towers. When they were built in 1974 they were advertised as a safe place against a plane flying into them. They found out they could get the flight training without anyone paying attention and they could take several flights on one morning to make a real impact against the US.
If you drop 2 things of different weight from the Sears Tower which hits the ground first?
Theoretically, they will strike the ground simultaneously, because falling objects accelerate at 9.8 m/s2 (or 32.2 ft/s2) regardless of their mass or weight. This is particularly true when objects fall in a vacuum, where air resistance is non-existent. In practice, however, the object that is more aerodynamic will strike the ground first, because air friction will have less effect on it, and its terminal velocity will be greater.

Security is much tighter then in those periods. Today we have far more rules governing what can and can not go on to planes used for commercial purposes (part 121).
Most laws are helpful, others are merely there to give TSA agents something to do. Apparently soda can cause a serious threat to national security when purchased outside the airport but they are safe when over charged for the same item.
