Serpentine Belts

You have to go to an auto-parts store to buy the serpentine belt. Any auto-parts store can tell you the correct size belt to purchase.

You can loosen the tension on your alternator belt by loosening the tensioner bolt. When the tensioner bolt is loose you can slide the alternator to the left.

This is a trick question isn't it? My MH Barina (5 door) has an electronic radiator fan. That is, it is driven by an electric motor rather than a fan belt.

This happened to me as well. Don't forget to re-charge the battery as well. Since the belt broke you probably can assume that the alternator stopped charging the battery at least for a moment.

Most autos have this info in the engine compatment somewhere. Take a good look everywhere. If really serious on working with you car, get a book involving your car at the auto parts store. Worth every penny and avoids simple maintenance questions on the internet.

If it's the 1.6L DOHC it's made to make life miserable. First take off the alternator belt. Then ya gotta get under the car with plenty of penetrating oil. There's a tightener pull mounted just down and forward of the AC compressor that uses a reverse thread bolt to adjust it's position. B/c of the reverse thread, Left loosens the belt, Right tightens, despite all logic (i don't care to explain). That bolt gets really rusty being where all the water splashes after it rains, so start sprayin the penetrating oil and good luck!

typicaly they are under the hood.

look at your belt with the engine running (keep your fingers out) the pully on a little arm that bounces is your tensioner.

If the belt is loose or squealing then either the belt is worn out and stretched beyond the ability of the tensioner to keep it tight or the tensioner is defective. Replace the belt and check the tensioner for tension and free turning without noise or side play.

I need a diagram to replace the serpentine belt on my 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 DOHC. Where do I go to find this diagram specific to my car?

To find your engine Look under hood Your engine should be on top engine cover My guess is it is a3.0L

As viewing the motor from the front of the car, the belt tensioner is located on the left side of the engine. On what is essentially the front of the motor, the belt tensioner is located just below the idler pulley.

Note:The drivebelt routing decal on the radiator shroud to help during drivebelt install * To replace the belt rotate the tensioner pulley clockwise to release belt tension * Remove the belt from the auxiliary components and slowly release the tensioner * Route the new belt over the various pulleys again rotating the tensioner to allow the belt to be installed then release the belt tensioner

etcetera ) The cam belt ( timing belt ) is protected by a plastic cover and

connects the engine crankshaft with the engine camshaft or camshafts

Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner which keeps tension on the belt. Once this is loose, pull the belt off of the tensioner. It will then come loose from the remaining pulleys (A/C compressor, water pump, etc.). A diagram should be located on top of the radiator showing the path of the belt to help you know how to install the new one.

I use a metric wrench on the center bolt of the idler to remove the tension off of the belt then just remove it. The new belt will be tighter and thereby harder to put on. There is a lot of tension on the idler so be careful. There should be a picture showing the routing of the new belt on the radiator support. This isn't that hard to do as my wife has helped me do it.

If it is the same as a 1993 ford ranger.. You will need a large adjustable wrench for the belt tensioner and a sized wrench to take off the three bolts of the actuator. Disconnect the battery wires at the battery, no need to try and shock you. Use the large wrench to pull back the self adjusting belt tensioner arm holding the main belt. The arm is on a spring and just needs to be moved to release the tension on the belt so you can take the belt off the alternator. Take out the three bolts holding the alternator in. Remove the wire harness and ground going to the alternator and exchange with new alternator. Repeat instructions in reverse to put the new alternator back in.

put a jack under the oil pan, but first be sure to put a block of wood of your jack so that you don't damage the oil pan, then slide the jack under the oil pan and lift up just so there is a little bite of pressure on the motor so that you can remove the motor mount bolts and lower the eng. down to get access to the bolt on the tensor to remove it. the just go in reverse order putting it back together

what you need is a ratchet 15mm socket. Losen the idler then slide off the serpentine belt off. There should be a diagram for routing the belt if not draw a diagram before removing it. Replace the serpentine belt crank it 2 or 3 times but don't start the engine. The 4th time start the engine this time the as the engine is idling eyeball the belt agaisnt the tensioner idler and crank pulley make sure the serpentine is algined. That's It. Bill

A Note:

Make sure that you have identified the tensioner pulley as apposed to the idler pulley. With the 15mm socket on the tensioner pulley's bolt, rotate it clockwise and this will release the tension on the belt, or in the case of installing a new serpentine belt, allow you to get it where it belongs. This is the case on my 1997 Dodge Caravan, and probably other year makes. Best of luck- Bryan

1993 Dodge Grand Caravan: Rotating the tensioner pulley's bolt clockwise was the way to replace my belt. By the way, the tensioner pulley in my van was one of the smaller ones in the middle of the whole system, attached to a silver arm coming off the tensioner.

First you must jack up engine on right side of car. 2nd remove the motor mount bolts. 3rd loosen 15mm nuts on inner fender. Then carefully slide belt through the motor mount.

If it has a serpentine belt - should be automatic through the belt tensioner
