Serpentine Belts

A 2003 Toyota 4 Runner serpentine belt diagram can be found in the maintenance manual. A person can also ask for a print off from an auto part store.

Cut it and pull it off. Be sure to take a look at the installation of the belt before removing it.

You will need to install the new in the same configuration. Tightening the belt can be tricky.

There should be a diagram either on the inside of the hood or on the crossmember in front of the radiator.

You have to release the pressure from tensioner which is attached to the Idler Pulley. The easiest way to do this is to remove the panel located at the bottom of the passenger fire wall. The panel is held in by 3 10mm screws. Once you remove the panel you can see the tensioner and pulley.

It might be the bearings are shot in your jack shaft.

Possible belt stretch or an idler not applying proper tension for some reason.

You don't. The belt tension is automatically adjusted via a spring loaded tensioner. If the serpentine belt is noisy or worn out prematurely. replace the tensioner. The belt should be inspected for cracks and other signs of wear. Replace worn out belt(s) before they break leaving you stranded.

Autozone doesn't have the online repair guide yet for your car, BUT, for about $13.00 Autozone has a repair MANUAL for it with step by step pics ect. NO, I don't work for Autozone but they are very handy to have close by. LOL

It isn't very hard..but make sure that the car is completely cool before you do this, you'll save yourself from being burnt from antifreeze!

-remove the alternator

-you will loose antifreeze so either catch it or just refill it when your done

-remove the 2 hoses that are connected to the tensioner and unscrew all the bolts(there are only a few)

-i would suggest putting some grease on the new tensioner before you try and out it back on because it is hard to get in otherwise

-put the bolts back on and make sure they are tight

-put the alternator back on

-put the serpentine belt back on and ur good to go

when you are done make sure you replace the antifreeze and watch for any leaks..it may leak a little bit from one area, it could be because there is an air bubble or its just flushing out any dirt(kinda like auto burpping)

Take a breaker bar and a socket make sure it's the right size socket for the bolt on the tensioner, insert the socket on the bolt and take the tension off the belt and remove make sure you remember the routing so you can replace as you put it back on pull on the tensioner so you can slip the belt back on then when you have it in let the tensioner go and take the socket out and you should have just changed you belt.

NO your car will run hot and seriously damage your motor, it will also keep from charging your battery. Suggest you take your car to a mechanic for repairs.

This is a technique I picked up in the middle of I-10 in New Orleans, in 104 degree heat, during peak traffic. (frustration is one hell of a motivator). You'll need two tools for this: 1: a 15mm box-end wrench or socket & ratchet to force the tensioner to compress. 2: a large, flat head screwdriver to pry the belt onto the alternator pulley. As you can guess, this requires both hands doing working independently of one another. Lace the belt, then place the blade of the screwdriver between the alternator pulley, and part of the belt that will go over it. It'll be very tight, and you can damage the belt and / or alternator if you're not careful. You will be facing the car for this part, and the space is tight. Place your socket / ratchet or wrench on the bolt at the center of the tensioner, while still keeping tension on the screwdriver & belt. In one motion, you will compress the tensioner (clockwise as viewed from the passenger side) and pry the belt over the alternator pulley. Get in, and drive away. First, get a new serpentine belt. There is a de-tensioning wrench that you can borrow from Kragen Auto Parts, or Pep Boys. This wrench is at least 3 feet long, and you attach it to your alternator's back end, which has a bar-metal spring tensioner. The wrench bends back this tensioner spring, which allows you to remove the old belt, and put in the new belt.

I figured this out on my 2002 Dakota, Magnum V8 4.7L engine. It took me a while, and then I found the answer in a Blog.

It's actually very simply. On the passenger side of the engine there is a superfluous belt pulley. That pulley is bolted to a spring loaded cam. Put a 15mm socket on it and turn clockwise (tighten). This will engage the spring. Once you have it loose enough you can remove the belt from one of the other pulleys. The small Alternator pulley seemed the easiest. You can easily work the belt around the fan without removing the schroud. I found a guide for the belt's path under the hood towards the front. If you can't find the belt routing diagram on your vehicle, simply draw your own before you remove the old one. Also handy to remember if your belt is missing and you have no diagram, is that the grooved pulleys touch the grooved side of the belt and the smooth pulleys touch the smooth side of the belt. With that in mind, trial and error routing is much simpler, there is only one way the belt will fit and engage all pulleys properly.

It is not too difficult to change a serpentine belt on a Northstar V8. A person needs to be able to maneuver around car parts and have no rush for time.

On a 3.3l the water pump is driven by the serpentine belt. On a 3.0l the water pump is driven by the timing belt.

There are a few different ways to adjust the drive belt or V-belt tension in a vehicle. The most popular used nowadays is a serpentine belt that connects to and activates every pulley in the engine. These serpentine belts require no tension adjustment as they incorporate an automatic belt tensioner. This type of tensioner has an internal pre-set spring and applies the correct amount of tension to the belt. Some older vehicles and some imports may use a combination of V-belts and serpentine belts in offset pulleys still controlled by the crankshaft pulley. Most often, there are belt tensioners on these vehicles that allow proper tension to be adjusted.
