Serpentine Belts

Serpentine-type belts have a flat profile with a number of grooves running lengthwise along the belt. These grooves are the exact reverse of the grooves in the outer edge of the pulley wheels; they increase the contact surface area, as well as prevent the belt from slipping off the wheel as it rotates.

Because of centrifugal force tension on both side will be increased but at the same time normal reaction force in between belt and pulley surface will goes down so frictional tension will be decrease and ultimately power transmission efficiency will decrease.

There is a tensioner pulley on the engine that has a sole job of tightening the belt up. Pull on that tensioner either right or left which ever way loosens the belt, and then slip the old belt off. Put the new belt on routing the belt the same way the old one went. May have to fight with that new belt to get on due to it being new and not stretched, but it will eventually go on.

The battery has insufficient power to crank the engine but enough power to power the lights. The starter motor needs considerably more power than the headlight bulbs.

Most likely use a socket and longer extension bar then loosen by pulling clockwise

serpentine is acually a belt that runs all your under the hood componets, alternator, power steering ect... this belt is very easy to change

not true, for most cars and trucks thats true but there are some that have 2 belts ones a serpentine the other is a V-belt, my 93 sunbird 2.0 has both, to answer your question just think of the first word in serpintine, serpin and in this case meaning snake or inperticular to coil like one, techniclly both are V-belts b ut serpintine is a differant type V-belt, the old V-belts just went straight around the pullys, serpintines wind all around, butch

What you need is a ratchet 15mm socket. Losen the idler then slide off the serpentine belt off. There should be a diagram for routing the belt if not draw a diagram before removing it. Replace the serpentine belt crank it 2 or 3 times but don't start the engine. The 4th time start the engine this time the as the engine is idling eyeball the belt agaisnt the tensioner idler and crank pulley make sure the serpentine is algined.

A Note:

Make sure that you have identified the tensioner pulley as apposed to the idler pulley. With the 15mm socket on the tensioner pulley's bolt, rotate it clockwise and this will release the tension on the belt, or in the case of installing a new serpentine belt, allow you to get it where it belongs. This is the case on my 1997 Dodge Caravan, and probably other year makes. Best of luck- Bryan

1993 Dodge Grand Caravan: Rotating the tensioner pulley's bolt clockwise was the way to replace my belt. By the way, the tensioner pulley in my van was one of the smaller ones in the middle of the whole system, attached to a silver arm coming off the tensioner. Good luck...

well I'm not quite sure on a '93 but on my 86 Si there is a hard as hell little bolt in an arced slotted bracket. if its been on a while you might have to loosen it alot or take it off all together. Once you have done that then simply take the belt off. (first you might have to take off the power steering and AC compressor belt. second as i said if its been on a while you'll have to pry it some to get it to swivel.) After the belt is off put the new belt on and then put the adjustment screw in until just slightly snug(you still want to be able to move it at this point CRUCIAL!. now here is where you need either an extra person with strength and someone to tighten the bolt. get a something you can use to pry the alt. (possibly what you used to pry it loose) till the belt is fairly taught. however be very careful on how you pry at it so as not to bust it. Also over tightening it may harm the pulley which is bad. the proper tension would be when you push on the belt with firm but not hard pressure it will give about a quarter of an inch(after you've tightened the adjustment screw. once you get proper tension go ahead and tighten down the screw as hard as you can use a cheater bar for extra leverage would be a good idea. put the rest of the belt you took off back on (p/s and A/C doesn't work on mine so i left them off) and start the car. if it squeaks its to loose(don't use belt dressing) just loosen the screw and pry it more taught and re tighten screw and try starting again. once you get the whole bit done drive the car around for about 20-40 minutes because the belt will get warmed up and also stretch a little bit. (it took mine about 3 hours to get completely worked in) after that recheck the tension the deflection of the belt should be between 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch with firm pressure as mentioned below. now enjoy a better MPG a better charged battery and a squeak free drive.

NOTE!make sure you have the belt seated in the grooves respectively you don't want the thing fly off at 3k RPM's and getting wrapped around other pulleys and totaling your car.

under the hood.

First locate the belt tensioner. On the 3.0L (88 - 90) it takes a 1/2 inch breaker bar to release the tension lift the breaker bar towards the top of the engine (Counter Clock Wise). On 3.3L and 3.8L you pull the breaker towards the front of the van (Clock Wise). 94 Quest doesn't have a serpentine belt, just three belts for alt, AC and water pump.

I replaced the headlight on my gf's 2005 Sorento. Open the hood and remove the three big bolts (size 10 wrench) which anchor the entire headlight assembly to the metal of the car. If you're replacing the driver side bulb, there are two by your left hand and one atop the headlight assembly - note: all are on easily accessible on the outside. not in the engine area. They're really easy to identify, so if you're not seeing them you're looking too hard. The entire headlight assembly comes out with a little wiggling. Unscrew the plastic hood (half a turn is all it takes) and unplug the plastic cable block that brings power to the bulb, GENTLY pry out the metal retaining bar and replace the bulb - there's a single small screw to loosen that holds it in place. Reassembly is a breeze. Once you've figured it out, it take five minutes or less. Good luck!

You don't/can't. If the belt is loose it may need replacement, the belt tensioner might need replacement, or the belt isn't installed correctly. If the symptoms were given, it would be easier to answer this question.

The first thing to check is that your transmission fluid level is correct. If it is too low the trans cannot pressurize. DO NOT Overfill.

The tensioner is spring loaded and there is provision for tightening it. To take it off take the bolt out that attatches it to the engine.

You don't. The serpentine belt tension is automatically maintained by the tensioner pulley, which is an idler pulley located on the passenger side of the system and looks like it doesn't drive anything. If the belt tension is incorrect, the tensioner pulley must be replaced.

If the question meant 'how to release tension from the belt' (for removal, etc.), this is done by applying the correct size socket wrench to the tensioner pulley's center nut and rocking the pulley away from the belt.

I generally just do this by eye.

Sighting so that I am sure a pulley is exactly parallel with with the rest

If I have trouble with this, I use a small wood working square to aid me in insuring I am correctly lined up.

Finally the only the ribbed pulleys are critical.

= How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 2002 ZX2 = Start by making a diagram of the belt route. Have the new belt handy. Raise the car on jack stands or ramps. Locate the tensioner pulley and release the belt tension from beneath the car on the front of the engine. (Bolt head is 14 mm) It will take some work but get the old belt off the car. (Good time to inspect water pump, hoses etc.) Refer to the diagram, route the new belt around pulleys. Leave the belt off the tensioner pulley, and the pulley immediately above it. Push the tensioner pulley back (to release position) and with the aide of an assistant, position the belt on the remainder of the pulleys. Release the tensioner pulley only after everybody is out of the way.

If you have the 1.9 liter: If you look down at the belt area, you will see a pully toward the front of the car that looks like it's attached to an arm. That is the tensioner pully. The tensioner is spring loaded. If you look at the arm of the tensioner there should be a square hole in it to insert a socket wrench or a breaker bar/pull handle to use as a lever to remove the tension from the belt. If there is no hle, then use a wrench(possibly 15mm) on the bolt head of the pully itself as your lever. As you hold the tensioner out of the way, unloop the old belt. Pay attention to the routing, so you can reinstall the new one correctly. Then, you route the new one in and again use your lever to move the tensioner so you can get the belt over the last pully. I usually put it over the alternator last. Use a light to make sure the belt is fully on all 5 grooves of every single pulley before you start the car.

All you do is pry the idler tension pulley back and remove the belt. Some idlers have a hole where you can use a ratchet to pry it back. Reverse the procedure to install the new one. If you have no diagram, then make a drawing or take a digital photo before removing the belt.
