if you look under the hood on the upper left side by the hood hinge , there is a diagram of how the serpentine belt should be arranged. Fit the belt around all the pulleys except the tension pulley. It could be too loose. Old belts become slick and may not grip like they should. Worn pulley could do it too. Check the tension. If it's OK, they have commercial sprays that help the belt grip better.

There is usually a diagram on the hood of the vehicle or somewhere in the manual. But you need to start from the bottom when putting the new belt on. Slip the belt around the harmonic balancer first then you just work your way up around all pullies with the alternator being the last pulley you put the belt around. The belt tensioner is very easy all you need is a 3/8 or 1/2 drive long wratchet to move the tensioner

The nut you used to relieve the tension to remove the belt should remove the tensioner, itself. NOTICE! Some auto parts stores have TWO very similar tensioner pulleys! On my first try the cupped washer on the tensioner bolt rubbed against the radial support ribs on the pulley itself destroying not only the pulley but the belt, also! Be SURE that the new pulley turns freely when the bolt is fully tightened!
