Why does the serpentine belt on a 1996 Ford Taurus break after installing a new water pump?
Answer Presumably, the old water pump was leaking. Antifreeze acts as a lubricant that can cause the belt to slip. The ethylene glycol can also be absorbed by the rubber causing the rubber to degrade. This causes more belt slip, which heats the belt and when it gets hot enough it breaks.
Other possibilities:
1: You incorrectly routed the belt on reinstallation causing it to rub somewhere and fail.
2: The new water pump is seized. With no belt installed, you are unable to spin the water pump pulley. Sometimes new parts are not better than broken parts because they are also broken.
Check all the pulleys for binding.
There is no spring loaded tensioners on the Mercury Villager. Look for manual adjustments, loosen the nut in the center of the adjustment idler's and then move the adjustment bolts toosen the belts for replacement. Since this vehicle does not have just one long serpentine belt the routing is fairly simple to figure out. If the belts are still on the vehicle you can draw a quick sketch of the routing to help when re-installing the belts.
What causes a fan belt to slip?
It could be too loose. Old belts become slick and may not grip like they should. Worn pulley could do it too. Check the tension. If it's OK, they have commercial sprays that help the belt grip better.

There is usually a diagram on the hood of the vehicle or somewhere in the manual. But you need to start from the bottom when putting the new belt on. Slip the belt around the harmonic balancer first then you just work your way up around all pullies with the alternator being the last pulley you put the belt around. The belt tensioner is very easy all you need is a 3/8 or 1/2 drive long wratchet to move the tensioner

A serpentine belt is a belt that starts at your crank pulley that routes through all of your pulleys such as water pump, power steering pump,A/C pump, alternator, and some vehicles even come with smog pumps. But not a lot of them do.
A serpentine belt is cheap and easy to replace but is a very important part on your vehicle. If it brakes from wear or anything else you will be stranded do to your water pump not working (over heating) and your alternator not (charging). Your car will shut off or just overheat and ruin your engine.
All belts (except timing belts) should be replaced every 30-45k miles.
1999 mercury grand marquis 4.6 serpentine belt routing?
The 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis has (2) TWO engine styles, both different. The style for Vin numbers with a "W" engine, and the Vin numbers with an "X".
The "W" series has the A/C Compressor to the RIGHT of the engine when viewed from the front.
The belt circles all components from the outside but two (2). The idler wheel located on top to the right of the alternator, and the tensioner pulley, located to the right and between the Crank and Water pump pulleys.
The belt goes UNDER the idler pulley, and passes to the Tensioner pulley BETWEEN the crank pulley and the water pump pulley.
As for the "X" series... The Belt goes, in clockwise rotation, from the outside looking AT the engine:
Starting with the top most component, OUTSIDE the Alternator, OUTSIDE the steering pump, INSIDE the water pump (V grooves on belt showing),OUTSIDE the crankshaft pulley, INSIDE the tensioner (V grooves on belt showing, again),OUTSIDE the A/C Compressor, and then towards the Alternator again. The Idler wheel presses against the belt on this return leg from the smooth side.

Where can i find a serpentine belt diagram for a 1993 s-10 chevrolet blaze?
How do you replace the serpentine belt tensioner on a 1990 Buick Park Avenue with AC?
First, you make sure you have a diagram of the path of the belt! You can get it from a book, the inside of the hood or make one yourself. Then remove the belt. The nut you used to relieve the tension to remove the belt should remove the tensioner, itself. NOTICE! Some auto parts stores have TWO very similar tensioner pulleys! On my first try the cupped washer on the tensioner bolt rubbed against the radial support ribs on the pulley itself destroying not only the pulley but the belt, also! Be SURE that the new pulley turns freely when the bolt is fully tightened!
