Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)

Who was the founder of the SPCA?

The ASPCA, an animal rights group, was founded in New York in April, 1866 by Henry Bergh (1811-1888). In 1874, he also contributed to the founding of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC).

The SPCA's in various cities and locales are not affiliated with the ASPCA, although they share some of the same goals. However, local agencies tend to be more involved in animal control. The group called SPCA International is also a separate legal entity.

The same applies to local Humane Societies: state and local HS's have no affiliation with the Humane Society of the US.

Who created rspca?

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was founded in 1824. It developed out of the first anti-cruelty bill, which was introduced by Richard Martin MP, who would later earn the nickname of 'Humanity Dick', leader of a group of twenty-two reformers. Also leading the group were William Wilberforce MP, who was already famous for his efforts to abolish slavery in the British Empire, and the Reverend Arthur Broome. The Act was passed in Parliament on 22 July 1822 and was against cruelty to farm animals, particularly cattle. The group assembled at the "Old Slaughters" Coffee House in London to create a society with the will and authority to enforce the new law. The SPCA, the first animal welfare society in any country was thus founded on 16 June 1824, and was subsequently granted its royal status by Queen Victoria in 1840.
Queen Victoria is credited with founding or at least giving the society Royal sponsorship. It is not quite clear if they are actually a Government agency like the Royal Mail or the Armed Forces. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals- ASPCA, was founded in l866 by one Henry Bergh. By the way by this time there were Animal welfare societies in Britain, then the US, and somewhat oddly- Czarist Russia! at one time Mr. Bergh was ambassador to Russia.

What they do is if someone sees another person abusing their pet they will call them. Then they will come, take the pet away and sue the owner. If you know someone who does this call the ASPCA and tell them what the persons name is, what kind of animal it is, where the abuse is happening, and your name. Please call if you do see an animal being abused it could save the life of a poor defenseless animal. it needs your help

Can 11 year olds work at the SPCA?

Doubtful. Most states prohibit minors from working until they are 14, with some exceptions for those that are 12 or older. And the liability issues for working with animals is likely to make it at least 16 before you can work there. You would have to contact your local office to find out what their age requirements are.

Who funds the SPCA?

We, the people along with nonprofit organizations and animal rights activists fund the SPCA because I don't believe there are any laws in place for the SPCA to receive funding from the federal government neither state nor local.

What is the Catholic Church's view of the RSPCA?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Church deals in revelation, She is the Mystical Body of Christ and is here to bring God to people and people to God. I don't think that RSPCA was included in the deposit of faith. That said, the Church requires people to exercise reasonable care of their environment, which would include their pets. However this should never be done to the exclusion of the people around us, who deserve our first consideration.

What does the SPCA do for animals?

Some of the goals of SPCA organizations are to protect animals against negligence, abuse, and exploitation, and by providing food and shelter and arranging adoptions, representing animal interests to ensure their well-being while working with law enforcement agencies, and to develop public awareness and compassion for all living creatures, whether pets, farm animals, or wild creatures.

The SPCA takes in stray or abused animals into there shelter and take care of them feeds them and loves them. Then they help the animals find loving homes

SPCA's are ment for animals that are currently getting abused, for them to help them until they are hopefully claimed. They have the SPCA for the purpose that they spend most attention with the hurt, or needed animals. If no one claims them in a certain amount of time, sadly they will put them down.

If people find homeless pets or can't take care of their pets anymore they take them to the SPCA. There the SPCA will get them back to health (if they're sick or hurt) and then put them up for adoption. They are a great place to get a pet from. If you are looking for a new pet I strongly suggest you get it from them.

Where does SPCA get its funding?

donations. the aspca does not receive money from the government, and is a non-profit organization, therefore it only receives momey from donations of outside sources, mostly individual and through fund raisers.

You are missing apples with oranges here. The ASPCA and local SPCA facilities are NOT governed by the same agency so you cannot compare the two, they are completely separated in all ways except that the ASPCA does provide grants to the local SPCA facilities across the country. Check your facts. :)

What is the rspca's background?

The organization was founded under its present, Royal, title in l840. Hence Queen Victoria can be considered the founder or at least sponsor. This was one of the earlier acts of her lengthy reign. There was an earlier animal-welfare association dating to 824 but it did not get the Royal stamp of approval until l840.

How many people help the ASPCA?

The answer varies on your local ASPCA. I can tell you this though, ASPCA's and local animal shelters are always looking for volunteers. Before you volunteer, go to your doctor or allergist to make sure you aren't allergic to any animal you may encounter while volunteering. If you are allergic to something, donate to their fund and try volunteering somewhere else.

What is the name of the song in the SPCA commercial shown on CNN?

== == == == == == I believe the artist is Sarah McLachlan and the song is "Angel" from the movie "City of Angels"

The song is indeed, Angel, from the "Surfacing" album.

Sometimes you'll also see it called "In the Arms of the Angel" or "In the Arms of An Angel." That may be helpful if you're looking to download the lyrics. Either way, it is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL song.
