What kind of government did the city-state sparta have?

sparta was founded by two men, one of whom was heracles and a friend. as sparta developed a government it kept two kings on the throne to represent the two founders. these royal blood lines were the argolids, the blood line of heracles and the second blood line was named after the son of heracles co-founder. that royal line was known as the eurypontids. next came the 28 elders. these men were picked for this honor for the rest of their lives. next came the five(5) ephors. these men were chosen once a year to serve for only one year, they could never be re-elected again. when it was a neccessity to debate a serius question, the first to discuss this were the two kings, after reaching an understanding with each other, they then joined with the 28 elders. once the kings and elders gathered , this group became known as the gerousia. after they had conferred with each other, the matter at hand, they then gave their advice, wisdom, and a path that they thought best. the ephors would then sit and consider this considerable sum of information. ironicaly it was the ephors who had the most power in the governing of sparta, if they agreed with the gerousia it was a go, if however they did not agree they would sit an discuss another course to follow.also, if a large engagement were to take place, one of the two kings led the battle, while the other occupied the throne of sparta. this type of government was not to be found anywhere else in all of ancient hellas !please do your self a favor. do not try to get precise historical facts fron the t.v. if you are a reader congratulatios, start with herodotus, thucidides, xenophon, diodorus and plutarch. these ancient sources should get you to the modern historians. stephenmccarthy21@yahoo.com

What was one way that Athens was more democratic than Sparta?

Sparta had a limited democracy where its citizens voted in assembly on matters put before them by the council.

Athens had a radical democracy where the citizens in assembly raised, discussed and voted on matters and the council implemented it.

Athens could afford this as it was living on the proceeds of its empire. When it lost its empire, it also scaled back its democracy, as the people had been misled by politicians into wars, and without the empire to pay, it could not afford the extravagences used to keep the citizens in the style they wanted to award themselves.

In 300 the movie how many soldiers do the Spartans have to face?

A Spartan force of 300 heavy infantry and 2,100 light infantry, together with 7,00 troops from other Greek city-states was led by king Leonidas as part of a blocking force at the pass of Thermopylae in 480 BCE during the Persian invasion.

Did Spartans or Athens win the war?

The Spartans won the Peloponnesian war, the only war between the Athenians and the Spartans.

What has more legacy Athens or Sparta?

I would say probably Sparta. Sparta was famed for being an extremely militaristic state. Men were trained to fight at a very young age, and great emphasis was placed on military honor.

Another view:

The Spartans could normally field 5,000 armoured warriors, but each one was supported by 7 light infantry/bowmen.

Athens could normally field 10,000 armoured infantry, with 5,000 light infantry. As they didn't fight each other without allies, it is difficult to call which army was 'bigger' when it came to comparing real strengths.

Sparta:

Women had more rights than Athens. They were expected to be strong and protect the house if the men were not home. They were expected to produce stong healthy boys as well.

What armor did athenian and Spartans wear?

It very much depends on time or century you are talking about. In the most glorious times the Spartans used bronze armor, with helmet, breastplate, greaves, and most importantly shield. And additional armor was thigh armor, shoulder, lower arm, groin plate, foot armor...The Athenians would use the same armor types, only probably in less numbers because they, unlike Spartans, had to provide themselves with the whole panoplia/armor set.And it was expensive..So in Athens a new, light, linen and leather armor appeared around the end of 6th century BC.It was cheaper and served good enough. We don't have any proof Spartans ever used this type.

Who was the main enemy of the Greek city-states?

Themselves. They used their plentiful supply of manpower to engage in endless warfare between themselves, causing serious losses, and so weakened themselves that they became easy targets for takeover by first Macedonia and then Rome.

Why did the Spartans fight to the death during the battle thermopylae?

How many were killed in the Athens and Sparta war?

First of all it was not Spartan war, because almost all Greek cities fought in it,either on Greek or Persian side.

No one can tell you the number, especially civilians who died. But the military losses of Greeks could have been few tens of thousands, and Persian few times more.Including storm that hit their fleet maybe more than hundred thousand people. But it is all greatly speculative
Sparta did not have a war against the Persians. It comprised part of the Greek forces in repelling the invasion of peninsular Greece - two years of a fifty year war involving several hundred Greek cities.

A spartan warrior was told to return from war with or to?

Their shield. It was believed that, if a Spartan returned without their shield, they had thrown it at the enemy as they ran away from the fight. Fleeing from battle in Sparta was a capital offense.

What were Athens' alliances?

It shifted over time as did all the Greek city-states. Originally friendly with Sparta, this fell apart 50 years later. Athens also turned the anti-Persian Delian League into an empire of its own, living off it to finance its Golden Age. It fought Thebes, then allied to it, and sided with many other city-states when convenient.

How did Sparta collapse?

Sparta had a limited number of the armoured infantry (hoplites) which was progressively eroded in battles over 100 years faster than they could breed replacements. They began to use their helots (serfs) to replace the losses, but they were not the same quality heavy infantry, so after the losses of a defeated by Thebes at Leuctra in 371 BCE Sparta could no longer raise a credible army. Although Thebes and Athens were later over-run by Macedonia, Sparta just didn't have the numbers to make a comeback.

Why was Sparta a rival of Athens?

The were not always enemies. They were when Persia invaded mainland Greece 480-479 BCE. Yet during the war between Athens and its allies and Sparta and its allies (431-404 BCE) the Persians provided the money for Sparta to raise a fleet to match the dominant Athenian one, resulting in Athens' final defeat.

Necessity and opportunity make strange bedfellows.

What rights held by women in Sparta that women in Athens didn't have?

Spartan Women overall had a lot more rights, rather then the Athenian Women. The Spartan women could sell property, own small businesses, chat with other men (whom they are not related too), wear shorter dresses, and go around the city by themselves. The only thing they couldn't do was hold office, and vote. The reason why they could do all of these things is, because in Sparta the woman didn't spend as much time with their husband since they were always training for the next war. Rather then the Athenian men, they had much more time to socialize so they mentored the woman a lot more.
