This is one job that requires skill and the proper tools. Serious damage can be done to the engine if done incorrectly. Leave this to an expert. If you have lots of time, a service manual and a comfortable place to work you can do it. But to change on on a working vehicle it will take you all day, and you want to MAK SURE you do it right or you'll ruin the valvetrain and likely have to trash the car. What model year maxima do you have? 1995 to present model years all have Timing Chains (not belts!). These chains are designed to last the life of the car. Over the years, this chain may stretch slightly, in which case you can have it tightened. It should cost very little to have your local mechanic adjust the tension on your timing belt.

These thermostats are located under the housing where the lower radiator hose attaches to engine.Do not skimp here get thermostat from Subaru dealer this will avoid throttling of the thermostat which often happens with some aftermarket thermostats.---i.e. engine going up in temp then cool down every 2 minutes while cool out This cases excessive wear of the head gaskets among other things.Be sure that the spring end is towards engine.Also be sure one of the little cutouts in the O ring for gasket is lined up with the checkball weight in thermostat.Remove the plastic screw in top of radiator,this will aid in bleeding when refilling radiator.Fill radiator slowly be patient coolant has to flow around the checkball in thermostat.rapid filling will cause ball to shut.After topped start engine and run for 10 seconds,turn off,refill again.Bring recovery tank to full mark.Reinstall plastic screw in radiator,radiator cap.Start engine bring to normal temp upper radiator hose will be hot when this temp is achieved.Stop engine allow to cool top radiator once more

Disconnect motor mounts from block, drain pan, lift by balancer a few inches to clear pan. Front & rear crank seals are tricky. This is not a job for inexperienced.

You have to take the panel off the inside of the back trunk door. You will then see the locking mechanism inside. (Sit on the floor of the car and lower the trunk door down on your legs gently, easier to work on.) There is a lever in back of the mechanism that springs the latch open. To watch it function, click your lock button on your remote while watching. If there is no action, you will probably have to replace the entire mechanism (not a big deal; dealer 175 bucks, junk yard part much cheaper). IF you hear a click, but trunk mechanism fails to release, then the part is good. You need to disconnect the long bent rod that projects upward toward the window (it kind of pries off the bottom of the connection easily). Then, you will see that the top of this rod is threaded. LENGHTEN the rod by unscrewing the rod several turns. Reattach the bottom of the rod and try your remote to see if it unlocks. If not, then unscrew the rod couple more turns. Continue unscrewing and reattaching until the mechanism works. NB I can't remember if you are suppose to Lenghten or Shorten that rod, so you may have to make several trials to see which works. djp6486@hotmail.com

IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE (IAC) Definition: An electrically-operated valve which allows air to bypass the throttle plate in a fuel injected engine to regulate engine idle speed. There are two bolts and one plug.It should only take you around 10 or 15 minutes to change. Buy it new; it doesn't even pay to clean it. It works half the times. But it will go bad eventually…

find the reset button under the drivers dash, its atached to two brown wires. once you've found the button turn the key on and hold the button at the same time. this will reset the system and stop the lights from flashing.

There is no set time or mileage. It should be replaced when it leaks or becomes noisy or ALWAYS when replacing the timing belt. You should consider them to be a set, when one needs changed, so does the other. They are cheap compared to the labor expense of changing them. The water pump is powered by the timing belt and takes just an extra few minutes to change when doing the timing belt. I speak from experience since I had to pay for the job twice when the water pump of my '96 Outback went bad within weeks of replacing the timing belt. Good luck! --Ken

The short answer is yes.

A battery filler bulb (also called a turkey baster) works fine. Do not use one that was used for brake fluid or battery acid. Open radiator cap, and knock you self out taking 3oz at a time.

You start in the console at the bottom of the storage tray. Remove a couple of screws there, as I recall, and lift the tray out. That should expose a couple more screws that hold the panel around the shifter. Take them out, lift the panel, and you have access to the bulb. Only tool required is a phillips screwdriver. I believe that it uses a number 194 bulb. Easy fix and an almost instant feeling of accomplishment.

The bulb is accessed from under the car. Do not attempt to remove anything on the face of the bulb. Here is what I did today:

1. There is an undercarriage cover that is held in place by plastic retainers. To remove the retainer and still be able to reuse it, you'll need to pry up the center of the retainer with a small flathead screwdriver. Once it's partially up, use needle nose pliers or the same screwdriver to pry the center up further. Once it is up far enough, the entire plug should come out. Save this for later.

2. Once the one retainer is removed, you should be able to push the cover up until you can see the bulb.

3. Twist the entire bulb assembly counter clockwise. You don't need to remove the screws. The bulb assembly should easily pull away from the socket.

4. Using that same small flathead screwdriver, push on the tab that holds the bad bulb into the rubber/plastic connection. With the tab pushed in, the bulb should be easily removed from the connection.

5. Plug the new bulb back in to the connection. At this point, you might want to turn on your fog lamps to verify that they light up before putting them back into the sockets.

6. Place the connected lamp back into the same socket it was in before and at the same angle. Twist clockwise to lock into place

7. Pull the undercarriage cover back into place. Make sure the hole that the connector came out of is aligned with the hole to lock it back into place.

8. With the center pin on the connector pulled up as far as possible, the rest of the connector should go into the cover and into the attaching hole without much trouble. If it does not, you may need to pull the center pin out a bit more.

9. Once the connector is in place and the center pin is up, use a hammer to push the center pin back down. This will lock the connector pin and will hold the cover in place.
