How does Menelaus know that Telemachus is Odysseus' son?

Menelaus notices Telemachus's hands and feet. (weird, i know). While talking to his wife, Helen (the Helen) he says, "Now that you mention it, I see the likeness too. . .Odysseus'feet were like the boy's, his hands as well, his glancing eyes, his head, and the fine shock of his hair." How he remembered all that about Odysseus, I don't know. Menelaus also realizes Telemachus must be Odysseus's son because when he speaks of him, Telemachus breaks down and starts crying right there.

What are some of the reasons for One on one combat in The Iliad?

While the Illiad is full of several different battles, the prominent battles always take place between two individual "heroes". Typically these two heroes ride into battle on their chariots, dismount, and square off in what can only be imagined to be a cleared ring between battle lines. You have to remember several points when understanding the reasoning for this: 1: Winner of the fight inherrited any armor, horses, weaponry which the loser was in posession of. 2: Heroes are kings, and very important individuals. Having one king killed by a farmer would destroy their honor, and would be against the wishes of the gods. Thus the common field soldiers would avoid combat where a hero was, meaning that a hero could literally cut through enemy lines unassailed. 3: Heroes were often surrounded by their personal retinue of loyal soldiers who would prevent anyone but another hero from engaging them. 4: To fight in the normal ranks would be beneath any great hero, one can hardly imagine the King of France in the front ranks, nor could we imagine a German company actually killing such an individual, they would be captured at the cost of several divisions of field soldiers, the Illiad heroes engage one another in much the same way. 5: Finally, chariot combat is a memory in Homer, rather than using chariots for their war purpose (to drive into a large contingency of foot soldiers and attack from your heightened, armored platform), they are used much like limosines, as a glorified form of transport. There is some question as to whether this is because the individuals in Homers time no longer used chariots, and this is a distorted cultural memory, or whether or not battle tactics had changes to such a degree that chariot warfare was no longer possible (unlikely).

Hope that helps :)

In The Iliad does Hector battle Ajax?

Yes he does. Iliad, book 7, describes their single combat in which Hector is almost defeated but the duel is interrupted by a "herald of Zeus". Interestingly enough, to end their aborted duel they exchange weapons as gifts, Hector receives Ajax's war-belt and Ajax receives Hector's sword. Achilles lashes Hector's body to his chariot with the war-belt as he drags his corpse around the walls of Troy. Ajax, ashamed at losing the arms of Achilles, commits suicide with Hector's sword.
