Who were the Greeks?

The Greeks were an ancient civilization of people who lived on the isle of Greece in the medditeranean sea. The Greeks were renowned for their arts and politics. They were the first civilization to form a democracy, voting for their leaders instead of having a long line of kings. At some point in time, the Romans,(from Italy) the strongest military wise civilization of their time, came along and conquered the Greeks, starting their huge empire. But when they conquered it, they liked the style of art, language, and politics of the Greeks. They then copied their art and culture and built the greatest empire ever built in that area. So when you read about the rennaciannse, the archetects who made those beautiful statues are from Italy, the descendants of the Romans. And the style and beauty of those statues comes from the Greeks. So Leonardo and Michaelangolo better thank the Greeks for all they have accompilished!

Briefly, Indo-European nomads from Asia who captured and settled as farmers in peninsular Greece, and then established colonies around the Mediterranean and Black Seas from Spain in the west to Asia Minor in the east.

Who are the Greeks?

i am not an expert on geeks more just generally greece... Ancient Contributions

Greece is an amazing civilization which contributed many items and ideas to our civilization. The additions and achievements are too numerous to count but there are a couple I am familiar with. For example: invention of democracy, the Greek Olympics, and creating the columns. Greeks had an advantage with natural protection from the rest of the world like mountains, rivers and seas. This gave them time to advance their arts and civilization rather than focus on war and defense. PENIS AND SEX

The invention o democracy is an invention that runs our country an life. Democracy is the idea of the citizens having a say in what happens and who their leader is. Today our country uses a democratic republic. Just recently people were voting for our US leader, the president. The founder of this idea was Solon, the "father of democracy". Pericles was a powerful ancient Greek statesman from Athens, Greece. We have a system of justice and they had one too. Our systems are very closely related. The Greek trial was held outdoors for fear of being poisoned with a bad soul and the vote was counted by majority vote. Today all of the votes need to be the same. There could even be up to 2,000 jurors! Both the prosecutor and the accused had 1 speech to tell their side of the story. Their were no lawyers either. This is where the US differs. The "judge had no control of the outcome of whether the accused was guilty or not. They were there to only keep order. Some of the penalties were lightened from death to debt. Solon is a legendary figure.

A famous modern and ancient sporting event are the Greek Olympics. Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympic Games in 1921. The Olympic flag and flame are some of the most important pieces of the games. The flag has 5 circles each one was colored either blue, black, red, yellow or green. Each flag in the world has at least 1 of the colors on the Olympic flag. The Olympic flame is lit in a torch at the beginning of the games in Olympia by the sun and is then passed from runner to runner until it reaches the stadium in the hosting city. The torch then lights a gigantic bowl in the stadium. The flame is ignited at the conclusion of the games. The flame represents purity and striving for perfection. It also shows the connection between the ancient and modern games. There were no wars during the games and everyone was everyone's alli. Women could only compete in the chariot race for anyone competing in the games did not wear any type of clothing or covering. The Olympic games are still continuous and they will be for many years to come.

Greeks, especially the Athenians, were experts in the arts category. One of their structural achievements was the columns. There are 3 types: Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian. The Ionic column has a swirl design. This design column can be found on the Jefferson Memorial and also the temple for Athena in Athens. The Doric column is a basic more squarish design. Doric columns were used on the Parthenon building which was built by Pericles. The other example is the Corinthian column which can be found on the Charlotte City Hall building in North Carolina. The Corinthian column is more decorative and it usually has floral patterns on it. All 3 of these columns have ridges along the shaft (middle section of the column). You can find these columns under arches and in the front of some modern houses. These columns weren't just for decoration they were also for sturdiness. In Greece their roofs were made of marble, a very heavy material for a roof. This structure was very smart for the ancient times.

I could go on for hours about how amazing each accomplishment of the Greeks was. These are just 3 of the ancient genius discoveries the Greeks have contributed. You might not realize it but the United States of America is a relatively new country. Most everything you see is a borrowed idea from a different civilization. Everywhere you look there are many, many achievements from many, many cultures. The columns, Olympic Games and democracy are 3 of them which in their own small ways have made this country what it is today. Greece is a very big part of American heritage.

Was 300 movie fact or fiction?

probably fiction AND fact

like, there is a place called Sparta, but obviously there was no loud guy yelling his head off.. - sorry, i didn't really like the movie

Actually, there was. Leonidas was famous for his loud voice and warcry!

Andriean Scot:- My username mean Scot of Manliness. andriea being the ancient spartan word for maleness, summing up their civilization in one!

Anywho, 300 is VERY fact filled, right down to individual words spoken. These were really said:

"They look thirsty!" - Spartan

"Then Let's give them something to drink!" - Leonidas

"Immortals? We'll put their name to the test!" - Leonidas

"Only Spartan Women produce real men" - Gorgo

"We will fight in the shade" - Dieneces

"Tonight we dine in Hell" - Leonidas

Persian - "Spartans! Hand over your arms!"

Leonidas - "Come and get Them"

Ephialtes however was not deformed, nor ex-spartan. He lived in Malis, a town in the hills south of Thermopylae. The number of Persians is actually underrated in the film!! Herodotus records there being 5,283,220 Persians (but that is probably a lie!) to 300's 2,000,000!! In the film they actually put a piece of unhistorical clothing on the Spartans! They wore no sandals, from childhood they walked over sharp rocks and ashes to harden their soles. Other than that and a missing cuirass, their armor is fairly accurate. Also, the Immortals were not souless beast, just 10,000 crack troops recruited by Xerxes to be his bodyguard, they were not ninjaesque, they looked verymuch like the emissaries at the beginning of the movie. I could say more as i am a scholar of thermopylae if youwant more info email me at fergus42@hotmail.co.UK, I'll be glad to respond!

Of Course 300 is a retelling of Thermopylae by the Spartans (Delios prior to the battle of Platea). So all that is shown in 300 is what the Spartans of course could have recounted it as! Deformed old creatures, huge half naked almost indestructable warriors. It's all relative!
