DISCONNECT THE MOTOR MOUNTS ON THE LEFT SIDE, PLACE JACK UNDER OIL PAN, PUT PIECE OF WOOD BETWEEN JACK AND OIL PAN AND RAISE ENGINE. THIS WILL GIVE CLEARANCE BETWEEN FRAME RAIL AND IDLER. REPLACEMENT IDLERS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE FROM FORD, SO YOU HAVE TO KNOCK OUT BEARING AND REPLACE IT WITH NEW ONE. BEARINGS ARE COMMON AT MOST JOBBERS FOR LESS THAN 5 BUCKS. REMOVE SERPENTINE BELT REMOVE IDLER BOLT AND PULLEY, REPLACEMENT IS REVERSAL OF THIS. LOWER ENGINE, TIGHTEN MOUNTS AND YOU ARE READY TO GO.

The thermostat is located below the intake plenum assembly, on the passenger side. I believe you can see a part of the thermo from the pass side. It is a labor intensive process to replace it, hence the ~$300 repair quote from dealership. A lot of engine components have to come off to get to the thermo. The trickiest part of the replacement is finding the tool to undo the hose clips that hold the rubber on the plenum. These clips are called clic-R collar hose clamps. Remove the water supply hose from the top of your 2000 Mercury Villager thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. The old thermostat will simply lifts out. Drop in the new thermostat and reverse the process.

Every new car, and most cars produced after 1980, have an oxygen sensor. The sensor is part of the emissions control system and feeds data to the engine management computer. The goal of the sensor is to help the engine run as efficiently as possible and also to produce as few emissions as possible.

A gasoline engine burns gasoline in the presence of oxygen (see How Car Engines Work for complete details). It turns out that there is a particular ratio of air and gasoline that is "perfect," and that ratio is 14.7:1 (different fuels have different perfect ratios -- the ratio depends on the amount of hydrogen and carbon found in a given amount of fuel). If there is less air than this perfect ratio, then there will be fuel left over after combustion. This is called a rich mixture. Rich mixtures are bad because the unburned fuel creates pollution. If there is more air than this perfect ratio, then there is excess oxygen. This is called a lean mixture. A lean mixture tends to produce more nitrogen-oxide pollutants, and, in some cases, it can cause poor performance and even engine damage.

The oxygen sensor is positioned in the exhaust pipe and can detect rich and lean mixtures. The mechanism in most sensors involves a chemical reaction that generates a voltage (see the patents below for details). The engine's computer looks at the voltage to determine if the mixture is rich or lean, and adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine accordingly.

The reason why the engine needs the oxygen sensor is because the amount of oxygen that the engine can pull in depends on all sorts of things, such as the altitude, the temperature of the air, the temperature of the engine, the barometric pressure, the load on the engine, etc.

When the oxygen sensor fails, the computer can no longer sense the air/fuel ratio, so it ends up guessing. Your car performs poorly and uses more fuel than it needs to.

Please take it in. You have to take the exhaust crossover pipe off to get the thermostat in and out and you can't get at half the bolts.

You also need to remove the throttle body and will need a new gasket because the old one will crack and fall apart.

Find the upper radiator hose then follow it to where it is clamped to the engine. That mounting is the thermostat cover; remove it and the thermostat is inside. When you replace it make very sure you put the new one in correctly. It should be marked or have a picture of how it faces in the instructions.

If you have a heat pump A/C unit then you have auxillary heat and emergency heat. The EM stands for emergency heat, which is using only your electric heat strips or gas heat, depending on your system. The auxillary heat uses your compressor inside of your outside unit. Say the house is 60 degrees inside and you set your stat to 70, the temperature difference is so great that if the heat pump alone cannot satisfy, then the auxillary heat would come on to assist the heat pump. Say you were to get a leak in either your condenser or evaporator coils, your heat pump would not work on the regular heat setting on the tstat. In this circumstance you would want to use just the emergency heat until a service tech can evaluate the system.

When at home, 76-78 is a good temperature to keep the air conditioning at. When not home, move it up to 84-86.
