No just make sure that the engine is cool. take the radiator cap off MAKE SURE ENGINE IS COOL... then you can take the thermostat housing off and replace the gasket you might have to replace the thermostat as the gasket might be an O ring around the Thermostat and not bought separatly. after your done fill up with water.

follow the top radiator hose down to the enginge and gently remove the two screw bolts holding the housing to the engine.remove the housing. The thermostat can then be removed by hand.

You need to get the water pump replaced, because the coolant is not circulating (that is why the radiator stays cold even though the engine is overheating). Because this requires the cambelt ("timing belt") to be removed and then put back in the correct position afterwards, this is not a simple job and is likely to cost you a couple hundred quid.

Take the opportunity to check your service history for if the cambelt is due to be changed in the next 10,000 miles - if it is, you can save money in the next couple of years by getting it changed at the same time.

Water will flow too quickly through rad for it to do it's job.

it is inside of an aluminum housing that join three hoses on the drivers side of the engine

My blower would blow cold air at idle & engine would start to overheat, I replaced my thermostat & problem solved.

It may have a bad heater core.

It is under the housing that the upper radiator hose hooks to on the engine .

clamp or fastener not tight enough!!! or hose not push up on neck of radiator or push to far on neck pass the marker which is a raised marker/stopper

Very tricky indeed ! Without the proper tools don't try it ! Remove the air filter housing. With the right tools you can now get to the 2 t-stat housing bolts. Remove the bolts and slide it out. Remove old t-stat and install new one(taking care to make sure it is positioned the correct way), re-install using gasket sealer !!! Note: easier said than done !

if it has a plastic impeller inside water pump it may be broke or faulty thermostat .check by boiling in water till temp its suppose to open

Sounds like you might have a blown transformer, or a blown fuse on the transformer. Hope for the fuse. Its on the Furnace. Be sure your white wire is on the heat side of the thermostat, and the red wire is on the correct terminal also. The transformer can be checked with a voltmeter.

The power to the thermostat comes from the transformer in the furnace or air handler whichever you have. 1) the power to the furnace/AH is off, 2) the control fuse that protects the transformer is blown, 3) the transformer is defective, 4) the wire between the furnace and the thermostat got cut.
