First, you add up 3, 6, 5, 4, and 2. Which is 20. Then, you had 5 numbers, so divide 20 by 5. Which equals 4. That is your mean, which is basically an average of many numbers.

Have the "Throttle Position Sensor" checked. I don't think this is a component that you can easily check yourself with a meter. I had an '87 Dakota V6 that stalled just as you described. Replacing the throttle position sensor solved the problem. If you know how to retrieve error codes*, a faulty throttle position sensor should show up as code 23. * cycle the ignition switch from On to Off, and then On again within 5 seconds. The "check engine" light will flash the codes. Eight flashes / pause / eight flashes = the start of the test. After the two eights any stored error codes are flashed. You're looking for a two / pause / three flash sequence. When all errors have been reported the light will flash "55" (five flashes / pause / five flashes) to signal the end of the test. The '87 model is the first year of the Dakota and also the only year to have a carburetor, therefore there is no throttle position sensor (TPS). Throttle position sensors are a component of fuel injection systems. I'd take a look for any loose or disconnected vacuum hoses first. I'd then check timing and the rest of your ignition system. Then check your carburetor idle setting to make sure it's not set too low. Unfortunately there are quite a few possible causes for your problem. Get yourself a FACTORY service manual not a Hayne's or Chilton (there is a huge difference). Go through the diagnostic flow charts to try and norrow down your problem. The timing specs are supposed to be under the hood on the emissions tag.

The better timing lights have an advance knob that allow you to set the total timing, which occurs usually somewhere above 2400 rpm. Most engines run right when the total timing is around 36-40 degrees BTDC.

Here's the thing: If you disconnect the vacuum advance hose and plug it, the engine timing at idle should be somewhere around 8 degrees BTDC. It would likely run fine anywhere between 4 degrees and 12 degrees, and you could fine tune it based on "seat of the pants" feel when driving. i.e.: if it pings on the hills, back it down a little, if it seems lazy off the line, try a little more.

If you have set the timing anywhere in the ballpark and it isn't running right, you might have a problem other than timing.

there are no timing adjustments for a mighty max that is fuel injected. they are computer driven so no adjustment is nessecary since the computer will adjust 15 degrees retard and 12 degrees advance. hope this helps.

yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I would say it is from right to left on the motor in the 1-2-3-4 order only because my gal had a cyl 3 misfire and found that the wire was not attached to the plug, and it was the third left most cylinder. I re-arranged the distributor to the motor and she said it drove better than she ever experienced before. So, from right to left....1-2-3-4. try it out, but if it doesn't seem to be working, shut it down immediately. How is it wired now?

Pull out #1 spark plug closest to camshaft on passenger side,take a long flat head screwdriver about 15 inches in length,insert in spark plug hole. Slowly turn crankshaft pulley(biggest wheel at bottom of motor) til the screwdriver travel to its highest

The correct firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, but, sometimes people swap out the camshaft for a 351 Cleveland cam which has the firing order of 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

use a bit of carb cleaner, also check sparkplug and air filter condition

351 w is a small block but has 1-2-7-2-6-5-4-8 also all 302 ho have this firing order.Ford did not make the 302 in 66 so its either a 289 or or a late 67
