On that vehicle there should be a "CATALYST" sticker somewhere under the hood that will tell you what the timing should be and whether to check it with the vacuum hose disconnected or what. Of course you know you need a strobe timing light and to have read the instructions that came with it, right?

starting from the clutch lever side of the bike, the cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4 and the order is 1-3-4-2 unless it is an "sc" in which case the order is 1-4-3-2

According to my notes, the firing order for my 1975 Ford 330 (an engine designation of "POMOLO"? in a F600 U-Haul Truck) is 15426378.

All V8 Chevrolet's firing order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. 1,3,5,7 is on the left bank and 2,4,6,8 is on the right bank. The distributor turns clockwise.

the timing should be set top dead center with the number one spark plug

There is a small "stud" that guides your top gear. Make sure this stud is straight UP. Make sure all studs, including the bottom gear, are straight up. Any timing marks to be straight up.

The timing should be set to 12 degrees. First you must fully warm up the engine and then disconnect the coolant temp sensor in the thermostat housing. On the back of the engine (Drivers Side) you will see a rectangular hole to see the timing marks. The hole will have 0 near the front of the car (towards the radiator, and 20 near the back of the car ( towards the firewall).

Now loosen the bolt at the base of the distributor (13mm) and rotate the dist. slowly until the groove in the window on the fly wheel reaches the 12 degree mark. Tighten the distributor back down, and reconnect the coolant temp sensor.

Disconnect the negative cable on the battery to erase the codes set by disconnecting the coolant temp sensor.

Size Principle

The firing order for the Celica GT is 1-3-4-2. This is the same firing order for all of the Toyota 4-cylinder engines.

It is set to zero with a scan tool. It can not be done with a timing light.

Look in the library for its manual, or you can go to your local auto zone or advanced auto parts store and they will print out the firing order for any vehicle you need. I don't know specifically re. the Volvo. All straight 4 cylinder engines use either 1,3,4,2 or 1,2,4,3; most use the former (1,3,4,2) Of course if the engine is not a straight "4", i.e. V4, or flat 4, this is meaningless.
