From September 1943 to May 1945, the two Allied armies incurred 312,000 casualties of ALL types(includes the British 8th Army); 188,746 of them were by the US 5th Army.

Quoted from: US Army History (Center for Military History), Volume "Cassino to the Alps". (note: the Fifth Army included units that were British and other nationalities, so that may explain why this number is higher than the above.)

The inauguration speech of President Benigno S. Aquino was a remarkable speech of our history. The speech is about the problems of our country that needs response from our government officials. Did president Harry S. Truman make the decision to drop bomb on japan during ww2?

That's a great question and difficult to answer. With most historical events, it depends on perspective. While most Americans support the decision, I would guess that a significant number of Japanese might feel differently. Given the factors of a costly war, an implacable enemy and a new technology, I think history will show the decision to bomb Hiroshima was justified. But I spoke with a Japanese gentleman who had lived through it and he felt the second bomb was unnecessary. The people of Japan had barely enough time to register what had happened before the second device was detonated three days later over Nagasaki.

What is the most important event that took place in the past 10 years?

There have been many events that one could consider major in the last ten years but the biggest would probably be September 11 when the terrorists flew the planes into the twin towers in New York. In the space of seconds the whole world, known by so many of us in the west, changed. Prior to that I would say John Kennedys' assassination. Both had an unexpected suddenness to them that stunned a world.

Where was the USS Missouri hit at?

On April 11, 1945, while off the coast of Okinawa, the USS Missouri (BB 63) was hit by a kamikaze aircraft on the starboard side aft, just below the main deck. This put a dent into the side of the ship just below the weather deck which remains to this day. There are photographs of the aircraft in the instant before the impact. The crash caused only superficial damage, though the starboard wing of the plane was thrown far forward and started a gasoline fire near 5 inch gun mount Number 3. The pilot, believed to be Petty Officer Ishino Setsuo, was torn in two by the impact and the upper half of his body came to rest on the ship's deck by one of the 40mm gun tubs. This portion of his remains was given a burial at sea the following day, with full honors, by Missouri's crew.
