Where can you buy Quorn vegetarian products in Maryland USA?
I haven't see it anywhere, but Sanitarium is trying to imitate the product as I've chatted to them and they are aware of the popularity of Quorn in the UK and elsewhere. Their product isn't the same thing however, and I certainly miss the fillets, sausages and the pepper steak. If an e-mail campaign gets going whereby Marlowe realises a market for it out here in Oz they might consider it. Only solution is to bombard the company with demands. Any ideas for a petition? I did chat to one of those small shops in Sydney who import British products "from home" sort of thing, and if they had enough requests they might consider cold freight import so get on the horn everyone! The shop I chatted with is in Skygardens in the Pitt St Mall. I bought a 3 month supply back from the UK in my luggage..It was frozen before I boarded at Heathrow, and it was mostly thawed by the time I got home but still cold. Marlowe didn't want to give me info about Quorn's shelf-life while travelling just in case I turned green or something after eating a re-frozen product, but I took the chance as I just love it. That was in 2003 and I'm still alive..You can declare it and get it through customs (although the doggies sniffed me like crazy) as the product has less than 10% egg and dairy. If anyone wants the ratios etc (only for the sausages, pepper steak and the fillets) I photocopied the official data from the company when they begrudgingly e-mailed it to me and I've kept it in case I ever do it again. Any ideas anyone? I suppose all that's needed is an enterprising person with experience in the import business.
What sweets do vegetarians eat?
Yes, but not some sweets. White sugar uses animal bones in processing, gelatin is inside the skin and bones of pigs/cows and carmine is made from crushed bugs.

Black beans, cashews, kidney beans, lentils, oatmeal, raisins, black-eyed peas, soybeans, sunflower seeds, chickpeas, whole-wheat bread, molasses.

What are somethings that vegetarians can't eat?
Vegetarians would not eat any form of fat that was produced from slaughtered animals. This would include lard and dripping but would not of course include butter as no animals are slaughtered to produce it (although there are some ethical considerations here that may make you choose not to eat it). You should also be careful of some margarines as animal fats or fish oils can be added (particularly those claiming to have raised levels of omega 3) Best bet is to read the label and avoid any that say contains animal fat or fish oil.
No, he is vegetarian. He never says that he's vegan. Vegetarian don't eat meat, fish or animal fat. Vegans don't eat anything from an animal like eggs, milk, or cheese. He eats cake, cookies, and other things that have animal by-products. He IS vegetarian just not vegan
What are the disadvantages of alternative protein foods?
Vegetarians tend to rely a lot on dairy products, wheat (gluten), and soy for protein. The disadvantages of these proteins is that many people develop allergies to these types of proteins.
If you have or develop allergies to these proteins, it is important to vary your food sources. Instead of over-relying on wheat, use wheat alternatives such as rice, millet, quinoa. Dairy products are ideally used sparingly, as grown animals and people do not need milk. There are many types of beans besides soy; lentils and peas tend to be less allergy forming. Nuts and seeds are an excellent source of protein as well.
Some people consider themselves semi-vegetarians and eat fish and maybe a small amount of poultry as part of a diet that's primarily made up of vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts.
How can a vegetarian meet all the recommendations for nutrients?
For protein--nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains.
For vitamins and minerals--fruits and vegetables.
For carbohydrates--whole grains and grain substitutes, also starchy vegetables.
Usually one does not have to worry about sufficient fat in a diet, but it is a good idea to eat some (except for trans fats) from oils and seeds. By eating plenty of whole grains, as well as vegetables and fruits rich in natural fats (legumes, avocados, squash, and nuts), a vegetarian should be able to fulfill all their nutritional needs. Foods rich in protein (such as soy, cheese, and eggs) are also a great source of nutrients. Even if a person is a staunch vegetarian, or vegan, and eats no animal products whatsoever, it is possible to maintain a healthy lifestyle with careful eating and the incorporation into your diet of iron and B vitamins.

Three of the Beatles became vegetarians: Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Starr became one for health reasons, Harrison for religious reasons (as a Hindu convert, though he later ate occasional chicken or fish), and McCartney out of his and his wife Linda's love of animals. John Lennon mostly followed a macrobiotic diet, but still ate meat on occasion. (He was a fan of Burger King's Whoppers, and also enjoyed sashimi.)
The late Linda McCartney published a series of vegetarian cookbooks, and later started a line of frozen vegetarian entrees. These made her independently wealthy, before her death in 1998.

Following a vegetarian diet is not dangerous to your health unless you do not consume a sufficient variety of foods to get all the different required nutrients. Vegetarians may be a step ahead of some of us because they generally give more thought to what they are eating and make more considered food choices. But they must extend their consideration to insure that their diets contain the nutritional requirements and caloric bulk to insure their health.

Oddly enough, I know vegetarians who do not eat enough fruits and vegetables! Eating protein and carbs is basic nutrition but for stellar health, eat 5-7 servings a day of fruits and vegetables.
Protein can be lacking in many vegetarians so eat plenty of beans, whole grains and/or grain substitutes, and nuts and seeds (also for essential oils).
