Why does scalp hurt with the flu?
The severe upper respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus called the "flu" often produces nasal and sinus congestion. This would make the head ache and even the top of the head hurt.
Any mammal can get rabies, but there have been no known cases of panda's having contracted it.
Can you get the flu by being in cold temperatures?
No. The flu is caused by an infectious organism (viruses) not temperature.
What does it mean for a virus to be latent in a person's body?
It means that the virus stays "hidden" and inactive in their bodies, instead of being completely destroyed, and then can later reactivate and cause new and sometimes different symptoms.
This happens, for example, with the virus that causes chicken pox. Once it is inactive after the acute phase of that infection, it can stay that way in the body (in the nerve tissues in this example) for decades, and then reactivate and cause the nerve pain and rash that is called "Shingles" or "Herpes Zoster" later in life. It is also true that polio viruses can remain latent until decades later and then reactivate with weakness and other, sometimes debilitating, symptoms. Several viruses are able to become latent this way.
How do you describe human papillomavirus?
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease that causes genital warts and can increase the risk of developing some cancers.
How long does a cold virus live in your home?
It can last up to 2 weeks. The length of time that cold or flu germs can survive outside the body on an environmental surface, such as a doorknob, varies greatly. But the suspected range is from a few seconds to 48 hours - depending on the specific virus and the type of surface.
Flu viruses tend to live longer on surfaces than cold viruses do. Also, it's generally believed that cold and flu viruses live longer on nonporous surfaces - such as plastic, metal or wood - than they do on porous surfaces - such as fabrics, skin or paper.
How do viruses synthesize the necessary components to replicatee?
Since viruses are not living, they have to somehow highjack the DNA of a living cell. They then use their DNA or RNA to give instructions to make virus parts instead of the normal cell parts. Once the parts are assembled, the viruses crowd the cell and break free, killing the cell, to do it again and again.
This virus has a shape like a soup can. See the link below for a micrograph:
Cylindrical shapes:
Tobacco mosaic virus
Wheat streak virus
Hepatitis C
Influenza, or the flu, is a very serious disease. It can kill people, especially very old or very young people who have weaker immune systems.
Can people be carriers of rabies and not know?
Generally speaking, no. Humans infected with the rabies virus may take up to several months before becoming symptomatic, but rabies is always symptomatic in humans. Moreover, humans do not appear to be able to transmit rabies, except in the very unusual case of a human in the active stage of the disease biting something else. That is, there is no passive transmission possible.
In fact, all species (except possibly bats, but even that is uncertain) will always develop an active case of rabies once infected. The onset time varies, as does the speed of death, but the disease is not transmittable during its non-active stage.
Viruses can only be seen with electron microscopes
Why do viruses depend in host cells?
Viruses are composed of protein and DNA. The DNA encodes the protein as well as the DNA for the virus. Viruses depend on host cells because they are incapable of reproducing themselves. They enter the host cell and the viral DNA is inserted into the host DNA. The virus then "hijacks" the host cells replication machinery to make more viral protein and viral DNA.
Can you have the flu without vomiting and diarrhea?
If you have influenza caused by the influenza viruses (affects the respiratory system), then you might have vomiting and diarrhea but they are not typical symptoms of influenza. It was a common symptom in some people who had the 2009 pandemic swine flu H1N1. But it usually is not common with most influenza viruses. It can occur due to a related problem such as dehydration, but not usually directly due to the virus in most bouts of the respiratory flu.
If you are talking about the "stomach flu", which is really not the flu and is just called that by tradition, then it would involve diarrhea but may or may not have associated nausea or vomiting. All three, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting are the most common symptoms of gastroenteritis.
Stomach flu is not a real medical diagnosis, though. We now know that this problem with vomiting and diarrhea and mild flu symptoms of mild fever, fatigue, aches and pains that we have called stomach flu, is actually gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) and can be caused by bacteria or viruses. The most common cause of gastroenteritis in the US is the Norovirus. This is known also as the Norwalk Flu.
How bacteria can protect themselves from attack by virus?
It produce some type of anzyme callet restriction enzyme that cut the foreing DNA of the virus that have been previoslly integrated into the host genome.
What does bacteriophage inject into a cell?
A bacteriophage ("eater of bacteria") inject their DNA (or RNA) into the cell.
How does the US stop China’s Coronavirus?
The US is currently doing everything to stop the spread of COVID-19. They have closed schools and public places, only keeping essential places open (e.x., supermarkets and pharmacies). They have told everyone to stay home, especially if you are sick. They have been saying to not touch your facial area with unwashed hands (eyes, nose and mouth, since COVID-19 can get through those areas and into your lungs), avoid contact with people who are sick, wash your hands regularly, clean regularly touched objects in your home, and cover your coughs and sneezes NOT WITH YOUR HANDS, but with your elbow.
Can you get rabies from blood coming from a skunk on any part of its body?
you can contract rabies from blood, tears, and saliva of any infected animal.
What are the demographics of West Nile virus infection?
The West Nile virus can infect males and females with equal frequency. There is no known predilection for people of specific ethnic backgrounds. People over 50 years old are at the highest risk of having serious illness.
Will a flu shot help once you have been exposed to the flu?
It won't prevent that particular exposure from resulting in infection, but if the exposure was to a different type of flu virus than the types of flu the vaccine was made to prevent, then you will still have protection to the other type(s) by getting the shot.
In healthy adults, the flu shot typically takes 2 weeks after injection to provide antibody protection against the flu, this is longer than the typical duration of most symptoms of the flu, so your body will likely have a stronger (and quicker) response to the full strength virus in the wild to which you were exposed and that will help before the shot can. It sure won't hurt and since you will likely not have a lab confirmation of the type of flu to which you were exposed, getting the flu shot is still important in case they are different types of flu viruses in the shot and in the exposure.
The shot will not act to reduce the symptoms or duration of the flu from the environmental exposure like an anti-viral medicine might. Consult with your doctor or the pharmacist for advice on whether you might benefit from anti-viral medicines and for advice on whether the flu vaccination is still needed since you have had wild exposure (they may be able to determine if the type of flu in the shot is the same or different from the type to which you were exposed and offer some opinions on the continued need for the vaccine). Likely they will still recommend that you get the vaccine, however.
Is the common cold the same as the flu?
No they are caused by two different viruses and the symptoms are slightly different. See more in the related questions below.
Can you get the flu by drinking after others that have it?
Yes. The flu virus enters your body mostly through your mouth, nose, and eyes where there is mucous tissue. If you put your mouth on a glass a sick person used, you will very likely get their germs, including the flu if they have it.
