80k miles or 128k kms. Water pump and idler should also be changed at this time, and any reputable mechanic should tell you this too. Its only another few bucks for the extra parts and a few extra minutes worth of work. They will have to flush the coolant at this time also to ensure theres no air in the system after replacing the waterpump.

The problem is caused by insufficient fuel in the fuel/air mixture while the engine is warming up.

Early 8-valve cars (and all 16-valve cars up to the 2.0 16v Corrado) are fitted with the mechanical K-Jetronic fuel injection system, which has a Warm Up Regulator (WUR). The WUR is responsible for increasing the fuel system pressure during the warmup phase, and should be the first thing to check on K-Jet cars with cold-running issues.

Later mk2 Golfs and earlier mk3 Golfs are fitted with the all-electronic Digifant fuel injection system. The Electronic Control Units on these cars rely on a blue Coolant Temperature Sensor for accurate fueling when cold. These blue CTS units can become inaccurate after many years, causing cold starting and running issues. Additionally, cars fitted with Digifant fuelling are very sensitive to vacuum leaks which will cause poor idling and cutting out during the warmup phase. One other area to check is the camshaft cover. This should be under pressure for correct engine running. There is a rubber coupling between the camshaft cover and the black plastic pressure regulator which sits on top. These couplings can perish and split with age causing a loss of pressure in the camshaft cover, and again manifest in poor cold idling and cutting out. A loose or missing oil filler cap will also cause a drop in pressure and the above symptoms.

More recent cars (generally built after 1995) should have the Mass Air Flow sensor checked, cleaned or replaced as this is critical for correct fueling. Beyond this simple check you should have your car inspected by a garage equipped with VAG-COM/VCDS diagnostic software which will greatly reduce any guesswork and wasted time.
