When you change the battery on your 2001 VW Golf 2.0 you have to go to the dealer to get the computer reset is there a way to do this yourself?

yes,go to parts house look for tool to plug in to your cig.lighter it has the plug in for a 9volt batt.on it,this will keep enough power the e.c.m. so the program will not be lost. Actually you don't have to 'reset' it. It is very common for the battery terminals to be disconnected for various maintenance activities. That action is no different than replacing the battery. I actually replaced my battery in my 2000 GLS 2.0 two weeks ago. No problems. If you mean the head unit, the code is in your manual, just enter it in after your replace the battery.

Does a turbo engine require a cool down period?

Yes, a Turbo requires a cooling down time. How long a time really depends on how hard the car was driven prior to wanting to turn it off. A turbo requires oil to circulate through it in order to keep it cool and lubricated. When you turn your engine off, the Turbo will continue to spin only oil will stop being supplied to the turbo unless the engine is running. THis can cause th turbo to heat up, and for residual oil still on the turbine blades to "cake" on to them. Over time, unless you allow a col down period, you will notice a substancial difference in the performance of your turbo. Most car manufacturers will not even mention this to you when buying a car with a turbo, and if they do, they will generally recomend a cool down period of 10 seconds. I would suggest 30 seconds after regular driving, and 1 - 1 1/2 minutes after hard driving.

How do you boost performance on a golf mk2 gti 1.8L 8valve?

you can start like I did with simply replacing the stock air filter with a reusable and washable K&N air filter. they make a stock replacement filter that works with the stock air cleaner assembly. A low flow performance exhaust cat back system is the next logical step. This car doesn't have a real on board computer like today's cars, so chipping it is out. There are however performance upgrades you can make to the CISE fuel injection system. Really other than going to the expense of adding a turbo or rebuilding the engine with performance goodies like a cam and such, there's not a whole lot more than that. Your car will run its best and keep you on the road with more trouble free miles if you keep your expectations and your modification on the low side. The simple exhaust and air filter upgrades will be enough for you to see a slight performance and mpg increase. Good luck

What causes epc light to come on?

All drive-by-wire cars (starting from 1995-2013) has an EPC light. EPC stands for Electronic Power Control which is controlled by the ECU (Engine Control Unit). This is a computerized hardware device with software to control all sub modules in the car that is connected by either an OBD II (on-board Diagnostics II) or Can Bus (Controller Area Network). Any input from these sub modules on the drive-train can activate the EPC circuit especially if the reason for sending its signals to the ECU, could cause damage to the engine. For example, if the car runs out of oil, or if the emissions exceed the prescribed level ect.... the sensor will send a signal to the ECU which will activate EPC circuit, cut power to the engine (limp mode). Limp mode signifies there is a problem and should be investigated. If not fixed, the EPC can ause the engine not to start unless corrective action is taken. See EPC solution at http://volkswagen-polo-highline.blogspot.com
