How do you remove a starter motor of a 1974 vw beetle?
Unhook the battery and jack up the right side of the car, then open the engine compartment lid. The starter is bolted to the transmission's mating flange. You need two 17mm box-end wrenches for this.
To get the top bolt out: Reach around behind the fan shroud, find the 17mm nut and remove it. It'll either come off or the bolt will spin round 'n' round. If the latter happens, crawl under, put a wrench on the top bolt and then go back up and unscrew the nut. (If you had to crawl under, once you've gotten the starter out take the top bolt to a welding shop and have the guy weld a little bolt to one of the flats on the bolt head. The big bolt will spin around until it hits the case and then will spin no more.)
Next, unhook the two wires. One pulls off, the other is bolted on with a 13mm nut.
To get the bottom nut off, hold the starter in one hand and remove the 17mm nut with the other. Do this because starters are heavy and can fall out right on your head.
How long was the VW Beetle sold for?
the original beetle... a few prototypes were around in '38, there are still a couple of '39s about, but then they pretty much cancelled them for ww2. they still made beetle derived vehicles though (kommandeurwagen, 181, schwimmwagen etc), so i guess you could say they were'nt completly abandoned. started up making civvy vehicles again in '45, and carried on up until 2003, although german production stopped in '79.

Well for starters, the 'New Beetle' has the engine located in the wrong place. ;-) It's in front, not in back like the original Bugs. Other key differences are that the New Beetle is water vs. air cooled on the older cars. The new model also has many modern day amenities, the classic Bugs were fairly minimalistic in design.
How do you Replace a VW's Thermostat?
Replacing a VW's (Volkswagen) thermostat differs from most other vehicles because of the placement of the thermostat. On most vehicles, the thermostat is in the intake manifold, easily found on the top of the engine or on the water pump, located on the lower half of the engine. Volkswagen places its thermostats behind the alternator, inside the engine block. This makes changing the thermostat a bit more challenging.
1.
Step 1
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal with an adjustable wrench.
2.
Step 2
Search for the idle pulley on the passenger side of the vehicle. Wedge a crowbar on the backside of the pulley and pull the crowbar forward to loosen tension on the serpentine belt. With tension released, pull the serpentine belt off the alternator.
3.
Step 3
Remove the wire connectors from the alternator. To do so, push on the locking tabs and pull the connectors out of the alternator.
4.
Step 4
Remove the mounting bolt that secures the alternator to the motor with a 14mm wrench and pull the alternator out of the engine bay.
5.
Step 5
Search for the thermostat housing on the engine block. Follow the radiator hose that extends upward from the bottom of the radiator and locate the end that connects to the engine. The metal tube the hose connects to is the thermostat housing.
6.
Step 6
Remove the thermostat housing from the engine block, using a 12mm socket, ratchet and extension bar. Lift the housing off the thermostat and push it and the hose downward, out of your way. Some fluid may drain from the hose. Some drainage is normal.
7.
Step 7
Lift the rubber O-ring off the base of the engine block and discard it. Pull the old thermostat out of the engine block with your fingers.
8.
Step 8
Place the new thermostat into the engine block with the metal pin facing out of the engine. Lay a new rubber O-ring onto the engine block. Both balance in place.
9.
Step 9
Place the thermostat housing on top of the O-ring and secure it into place.
10.
Step 10
Mount the alternator back into place.
11.
Step 11
Pull the idle pulley upward with the crowbar and slide the serpentine belt over the belt pulley on the alternator.
12.
Step 12
Reconnect the negative battery cable.

How do you put freon in a VW New Beetle?
Freon is put in the "Low" pressure side of the AC system.
How to find it:
When you open your hood, you'll see an AC line with an input line on it. The one closest to the front of the car is a High pressure side- DO NOT use this one.
Instead go to the right side of the car and look for another AC line with another 'service port' coming from the passenger side of the car. Unscrew it, and attach your Freon line here.
What does the oil light mean on 2000 vw beetle?

What causes my 73 vw super beetle explosion in carburetor?
By the description I'll guess what you're experiencing is a "backfire". This happens when the timing in the engine is off for whatever reason. When this happens the intake valve is not yet closed when the spark plug fires. The air/fuel mixture is ignited and the burning / expanding mixture goes back up the intake manifold to the carburetor with a loud bang.
Inspect and clean your distributor and give your ignition system the once over. Set your timing and it should take care of the problem. If not then the engine has other issues that are more involved to go over here.
