What was the meaning of the hand signals used by American forces during World War 2 as seen on the TV series 'Band of Brothers'?

To be successful in patrolling each man must be proficient and understand the signals of silent patrol, the individual sig's cannot really be described in a forum like this but they cover things like:Halt,Follow thru, Recce(take a look),Rendezvous (RV) at this point later if we are seperated, Gather around me for a breifing,Spread out, and many other such things. This communication is not exclusive to the U.S.army ,most countries forces will use it. A couple of sites I've visited including the historian Mark Bando's site, argue that the complicated hand signals used in BoB are anchronistic. In WW2, hand signals were relatively simple. The complex ones used in BoB were probably Vietnam era signals introduced by Dale Dye, the military technical adviser who is a USMC veteran of Vietnam. One Example; In "Day of Days" when they are assaulting the guns at Brecourt - When approaching the machine gun nest. Buck Compton signals that there is one MG42, 25 yards away and directs to attack with grenades.

In the movie Patton the initials WTF appear on the front bumper of an M-5 Half-track. What do they stand for?

Each truck and jeep were usually marked on the bumper with an abbreviated designation of the unit followed by the vehicle number. Thus 85-337I is an abbreviation for 85th Infantry Division, 337th Infantry Regiment, Co. I. WTF is probably an abbreviation for a Task Force. When the army was on the move, a smaller force was organized that included combined armor, infantry and artillery that was able to move quickly. These task forces were usually named after their commander. I would only be guessing on the name of this task force. If you had a date or a place, then it might help to identify this unit. Refer to a history book or the US Army's History of WW2 (also the website for Center for Military History) and you may find the reference to such as Task Force. I found it. Western Task Force

Did john halder invent the holocaust world war 2?

No, John Halder was a fictional character from the movie "Good". However, the character of John Halder represents the ideas and actions of the German citizenry of the 1930's. Eugenics (racial superiority) was very popular in the early 30's. Also, the idea that handicapped and mentally ill should be Euthanized because they were a drain on the finances of the welfare state. The idea was that it was human to do this. Hatred of Jews, gypsies, gays, handicapped and political dissidents increased through out the 30's. Their goods were stolen, they were deported to unwanted land, then labor camps to be worked to death. However, Hitler was always planning to kill the "unwanted". When working them to death did not work. The Final Solution was decided by Hitlers top brass including Heydrich and Eichmann. Ideas of moving all Jews (and other unwanted) to work camps were finalized and ideas of how to kill them freely discussed over brandy. They began by having them shot in mass executions. However, the Germans who carried out these executions began suffering from the stress. They became alcoholics and many committed suicide. So gassing was thought up as a human way for the executioners to kill millions. Meaning human for the executioners, they did not care if the victims were treated humanly.

Saving Private Ryan

How realistic is Saving Private Ryan?

It seems be very accurate (although you should not use the film as your only research if you are writing a term paper).

Veterans Gave it a Thumbs UpThe veterans of that invasion thought it did a very good job of depicting the occurrence of the invasion and combat in general. Another opinion:NO, the film is incredibly unrealistic. Yes, the cinematography is excellent BUT the story line itself is bordering on impossible. There is absolutely no chance that the American Army would risk the lives of 7 men, including a CAPTAIN and a PLATOON SERGEANT to rescue a PRIVATE. It simple did not happen and never would or will happen. Great movie though.

Where did Sgt Bill Guarnere's brother get killed in 'Band of Brothers'?

In the first episode of the TV-series "Band of Brothers", Sgt. Bill Guarnere puts on the wrong field jacket and finds a letter to his buddy.  He reads it and accidentally discovered that his brother was killed at Cassino.   Later, he turns and comments to his friend; "Where in the H### is Cassino?".

Sgt. Bill Guarnere's brother's name was Henry Guarnere.  Henry enlisted first and became a medic in the 47th Armored Medical Battalion of the 1st Armored Division.  Henry was a natural medical corpsman but that did not mean he was not exposed to danger.  The following is a citation for a Silver Star Medal he earned while his unit was in North Africa.

HENRY GUARNERE, (ASN 33026746), Technician Fifth Grade, Medical Detachment, * * * * * * * Battalion.  For gallantry in action on * * * 1943 in the vicinity of * * * * *, Tunisia.  During heavy counter battery fire a solider in a gun section was seriously wounded and unable to reach shelter.  Technician Fifth Grade Guarnere voluntarily and without hesitation ran to the wounded soldier and began administering first aid to him.  Although the position was still receiving heavy fire he completely disregarded his own welfare by remaining with the wounded soldier until he completed his first aid treatment.  His daring and heroic actions undoubtly save the soldier's life.  The gallantry, perseverance, and concern for the welfare of a wounded comrade displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Guarnere reflect great credit upon himself and the command and are highly commendable.   Entered Military Service from hiladelphia, Pennsylavania.  (Medal No. 24737)

After completing their objective in N. Africa, the 1st Armored Division was sent to mainland Italy and their first major battle there was at Monte Porchia during 5 days in January 1944.  This battle was a few weeks before the US 36th Division launched their failed attack to cross the Rappido River, which was before the "official" battles of Monte Cassino began.  Henry Guarnere was killed while fighting within sight of the prominent peak of Monte Cassino.

Pvt. Henry Guarnere was killed in action on 6 January, 1944 and is buried at the American Cemetery at Anzio.   Sgt. Bill Guarnere only found out about his brother's death on 5 June 1944, some 6 months later and the day before he parachuted into Normandy.  Bill Guarnere would soon earn a Silver Star Medal for his action on Normandy and get revenge for his brother's death.

Was Rachel S Stein in the movie Black Book a living person?

In my research I was unable to find any reference to a real person like the one in "Black Book" named "Rachel Stein". Considering she would be over 80 years old now (if real and still alive), and I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't want her real name used. The name "Rachel Stein" is very common, so the question comes up "What was her real name?"

What is trucizna that was used in the movie shindler's list?

Trucizna in polish means poison... impossible to know which kind of poison has been used.

Additional:

The poison most likely used here would be morphine, there is a chance it could be Heroin but morphine would be the most likely.200mg is the minimum lethal dose to kill an opiate naive patient,i.e. someone who does not use morphine regularly and has built up a tolerance, though doses of 60mg can kill in cases of hypersensitivity .The patient would become unconscious within a few minutes, the drug would the suppress their respiration and they would die from asphyxia. There would be no distress to the patient as they are unconscious and unaware that their breathing has stopped.Heroin would have the same effects.Morphine can be taken orally as seen here.

There are other drugs they could have used but many would take either longer to kill or cause the patient distress.
