After unification of South and North Yemen, Abdullah Saleh became Chairman of the Presidential council, until he became President of unified Yemen on 1994 October 1. Saleh would make Hadi the Vice President on October 3, 2 days later.
In early 2011, due to public protests similar to those in Tunisia and Egypt, Saleh announced he would step down in 2013. He moved into a transitional role on November 23, making Vice President Hadi the Acting President. After a one candidate election on 2012 February 21, Saleh officially stepped down on February 27th, ending over 3 decades of rule, making Hadi the second President of Yemen.
