John Tyler was elected vice-president, but became president upon the death of William Henry Harrison, just a month after he took office. The Whigs passed a bill to charter a third bank of the United States, as they had promised to do. Tyler vetoed it. They passed another version and Tyler vetoed that one too. His cabinet then resigned in protest.
John Tyler was considered a renegade candidate and it is rather surprising that his party won. One of the symbols of his campaign and presidency was hard cider.
John Tyler. He took over for William Henry Harrison (Whig Party) after his death in 1841. Tyler (Whig/Democratic) was President from 1841-1845. This was ironic because Harrison chose Tyler to be his vice president to gain votes from the Democratic Party without having to follow their beliefs. He died within the first year, however, and Tyler, a Democratic Party member, took the Presidency.
Washington was by far the better president . Tyler finished out the term of Harrioson and was at odds with his party from the beginning- he really did not have much of a chance as president. He was not nominated for another term by his party.
He was a member of the "Democratic-Republican" party, which existed from 1792 until 1825. When John Quincy Adams was elected, the party dissolved into two factions: the Democrats, and the "National Republicans" which eventually became the Whigs. Tyler initially supported the Democrats but later he ran for vice-president as a member of the Whigs. However, he rejected most of the Whigs' agenda, and when he ascended to the Presidency he was expelled from the party, after which Tyler formed a new "Democratic-Republican" party but they only held one convention.
John Tyler and his father belonged to the Democratic-Republican Party. This party was one of the first two political parties in the United States, founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the early 1790s. The Democratic-Republican Party eventually split into the Democratic Party and the Whig Party, with Tyler later becoming affiliated with the Whig Party during his presidency.
When you are the party leader you i think you can choose the map and boot people when they betray you
His Accidency, The President Without a Party, and Traitor Tyler were all given to John Tyler while he was president. His Accidency because he became president by "accident". The President without a Party because his party, the Whigs, disowned him midway through his first year in office. He turned acainst his friends and long time allys causing all his cabinet members to resign. This prompted Traitor Tyler.
The Republican Party didn't exist yet. Tyler was a long-time Democrat-Republican, but was nonetheless elected Vice President on the Whig ticket. During his period in office, he attempted to start a new party and for a brief time was officially not a member of any party.
September 13, 1841 was the date of Tyler's official expulsion from the Whig party.
