Well what you do is you get the mAh and divide it by the output of the charger.
Ex
1100mAh/20output=5
So that was an example and i got 5 hours.

The alternator is designed to keep the battery charged but not to charge a dead battery. You put a strain on the alternator and it can cause a diode to burn out. 30 year old battery?? I have never heard of a battery lasting this long. This has to be a record of some sort. I would contact the battery manufacture as they may want this battery and give you a new one for it. Anyway if the battery will not hold a charge it has a dead cell and needs to be replaced.
