Do you need a license to start a photography business?

I have the same question, and of the State agencies I've talked to so far the answer has been "I don't think so."

You definately need one for the county(s) you'll be operating in and depending on the city, you may need one for them too. In Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, the business license is known as a Business Tax Reciept or BTR for short.

No but if you're thinking about starting a Photography business, then YES. You have to go down to city Hall and fill out a form and pay some fee, which isn't a lot. This way the government can recognize your business and you have to pay taxes according to your profits...

Like any profession you need to be competent to do the job and in photography you do not need a license. Having proper qualifications will help in people having confidence in your ability. A lot of amateur photographers think they can earn a living and some do go on to make it. The most important part of the game is not the photography but the way you handle people. You must have proven work to show clients and you need a large bank balance to purchase the professional equipment that you need. You will always need two camera bodies plus lenses. Lighting and professional flash equipment is a must. The last thing you need to consider is what side of the profession are you aiming at. Media photography, newspapers, magazines etc. are attractive but you will have to join a long queue. Advertising is a tough one to get into. If you can get a position with an established photographer that can help. Weddings, portrait and social photography you can do from home. Industrial is okay but you need some serious equipment for that branch of the business. But first get qualified.
