The Anaconda Plan
The Anaconda Plan called for the blockade of all southern seaports and the control of the Mississippi.
The North used a strategy called the "Anaconda Plan". The plan was to set up a naval blockade along the eastern coast. The goal was to to block imports to the South and to strangle the South's economy. Hence, the name anaconda.
It closed a major port for the blockade-runners, and diminished Southern control over the Mississippi.
Lincoln used a three-part strategy known as the Anaconda Plan to defeat the Confederate States. His plan was to blockade Southern ports, seize control of the Mississippi River to divide the Confederacy in half, and to surround and attack the Confederacy on all sides.
It allowed the Union and enabled them to control the river systems and to blockade the entire southern coastline.
