It is a brackish estuary formed by the confluence of the Parana River and the Uruguay River. The fresh water extends well into the bay, and the first Spanish explorer in 1516 (Juan Diaz de Solis) called it the Mar Dulce (Fresh Water Sea).

Some geographers consider the Río de la Plata a gulf or marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean, while others consider it a river. Most Argentinians will tell you it is a river.

In Spanish, Rio = River, and Rio de la Plata means "River of Silver."
