When Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded the Turkish Republic in 1923, he intentionally made the country secular in order to make a clean break for the Islamic government of the Ottoman Empire. It was an authoritarian Kemalist parliament until the mid-1950s when the country opened up to more democratic reforms. By the 1960s, Turkey was truly a secular democracy. However, there is an increasing question over whether the AKP is a religious party and in violation of Turkey's principle of having a secular government.
