The first Europeans to reach mainland North America were almost certainly the Vikings lead by Leif Ericson around 1000 A.D. They established a colony in Lanse Aux Meadows Newfoundland that they maintained for about a year and is now a world heritage site. At the same time, they are believed to have traveled further south to what is now the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.
After that colony was "lost", the next European to reach mainland North America was either John Cabot in 1497 or Joao Fernandes Lavrador in 1498. It is unclear because while it is certain that Lavrador did see what is now called Labrador in Canada (and was named after him), it is uncertain whether Cabot discovered it the year before or not. It is clear that Cabot landed on the island of Newfoundland... making him and his crew the first Europeans since the Vikings to set foot on a part of the North American continent.
It is a very popular fallacy that Christopher Columbus discovered continental North America. He did not. Columbus landed in the Caribbean in 1492 and again in 1493. He landed in South America in 1498. In 1502 he visited Central America. Columbus never saw or set foot on the actual continent of North America. In fact, he died in 1506 not knowing he was ever anywhere near it and having only heard about it from the voyages of Cabot, Lavrador, Pero de Barcelos and the Corte-Reals.
The European who traveled the furthest inland in North America was the French explorer Jacques Cartier. In the 1530s, he ventured up the St. Lawrence River and reached what is now modern-day Montreal and Quebec City, exploring areas deep into the interior of Canada. His expeditions significantly contributed to European knowledge of the North American interior and its indigenous cultures.
The European explorer who rediscovered the ruins of Meroe was Giuseppe Ferlini, an Italian treasure hunter. In the 19th century, he looted the ancient pyramids at Meroe in modern-day Sudan in search of gold and artifacts.
The Kingdom of Spain was the first country to claim lands in North America following the successful expeditions of explorer Christopher Columbus. The first European city founded in the New World was Santo Domingo in 1497 which was founded in the present day Dominican Republic. The first city that was founded on the continents of North or South America was the city of Cumaná in modern day Venezuela in 1501.

John Cabot, an Italian explorer sailing under the English flag, is primarily associated with the exploration of North America, particularly the northeastern coast. His voyages in the late 15th century connected the European world with the North Atlantic region, specifically the areas that would become modern-day Canada. Cabot's expeditions contributed to the early European awareness of the New World, marking a significant moment in the Age of Discovery.
John Cabot was an Italian navigator, but was based in England and sailed under the English flag. He is credited as being the first modern European to discover the North American mainland, and establishing England's first colony in Newfoundland.
The first English explorer was John Cabot who visited modern-day Canada.
Yes it was necessary because it stopped many European countries from claiming territories in the North America
Hernando de Soto (c.1496/1497-1542) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who, while leading the first European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States, was the first European documented to have crossed the Mississippi river. :)

There was much economic progress in America during European colonization, during the 16th through 18th centuries. In modern-day America, economic progress appears to be at a standstill, as so does the rest of the free world.
