There is some dispute as to the origin and meaning of the name "Tampa".
It is believed to mean "sticks of fire" in the language of the Calusa, a Native American tribe that once lived in the area. Other historians claim the name refers to "the place to gather sticks". "Sticks of fire" may also relate to the high concentration of lightning strikes that Tampa Bay receives every year during the hot and wet summer months. Toponymist George R. Stewart writes that the name was the result of a miscommunication between the Spanish and the Indians, the Indian word being "itimpi", meaning simply "near it".
The name first appears in the memoir of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda, who had spent 17 years as a Calusa captive. He refers to it as "Tanpa" and describes it as an "important Calusa town", while "Tanpa" may be the basis for the modern name, Tampa.
The Tampa Bay Lightning got their team name due to the fact that Tampa, Florida is known as the lightning capital of the world.

No, Tampa Bay is not a city ---- Tampa Bay is the waterway (or estuary) that surrounds the city of Tampa, as well as it surrounding suburb cities of St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Sarasota. So, for mathematical minded people: Tampa Bay = waterway that surrounds the city of Tampa and surrounding suburbs Tampa = actually city itself Think of it this way. San Francisco has a bay too, right? Right, and the actual city's name is San Francisco. So, San Francisco Bay + Tampa Bay = two cities that have bays that are named after themselves. :)
Actually they play in St. Petersburg, Florida. Ironically, their name is the Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa is the name of the primary municipality in Hillsborough County. Tampa Bay is the name of the body of water that separates the City of Tampa from Clearwater and St Petersburg FL. Tampa Bay is also a reference to the Tampa Bay Area which includes the afore mentioned cities and the surrounding suburbs. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are located in Tampa, and the Tampa Bay Rays are in St Pete, but all share the name and common geography.
