The Angel"s Flight was a steep- funicular type of Cable Car run in this city- and steeper than the San Francisco type. two cars ran at once, were counterbalanced (like elevator cars) and the whole mechanism was controlled by an engineer operator from a fixed signal tower at the top of the incline. I don"t think it is still operating, may be restored or stored serviceable. Cable Cars are so closely associated with San Francisco it is a refreshing fact that other cities- usually on hilly routes, also used them.

Mass transit will be cheaper, more reliable, and easier for people to use in the long run than freeways. Like most cities and towns Los Angeles had a highly efficient mass transit system until the late 1940s, when a (probably illegal) holding company owned by the oil companies, the car manufacturers, and many land developers bought out every mass transit company in the entire US, then ripped out the rails and sold them and the cars for scrap. The goal of this conspiracy was to force people to buy more cars and more gas and buy houses way out in the new suburbs being built by the land developers (which would force people to buy even more gas). The end result has been what you see in Los Angeles and other large cities, high congestion and pollution from car exhaust. However a good efficient mass transit system requires significant planning.
