Although New York City is a predominately a Democratic Party stronghold, there is the nationally read newspaper called the Tribune. It is owned and run by abolitionist Republican Horace Greeley. In an editorial he urges Lincoln to "somehow end slavery". A few days later, on August 22, 1862, Lincoln replies to Greeley saying his primary goal is to save the Union. He stands firm in that whatever he does or does not do about slavery is based saving the Union first.
