The blue-and-white striped flag, with a white cross on a blue field in the canton, has been in use since 1822. The nine stripes are said to represent the nine syllables of the Greek patriot's motto: Eleutheria a Thanatos ('Freedom or Death'), while the white cross symbolises the Greek Orthodox religion.

Well, there are 2 possible theories:

The first view is that the 9 stripes are for the 9 muses from ancient Greece(Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia and Urania).

On the other hand, the second view is that the 5 blue stripes are the 5 syllables of the greek word Ε-λευ-θε-ρί-α(Eleftheria=Freedom) and the 4 white stripes are for ή-θά-να-τος(i thanatos=or death)! It is the phrase that Greeks used during the revolution(Freedom or Death!)!

In both theories, the blue canton in the upper hoist-side corner bearing a white cross symbolises the official greek religion, Greek Orthodoxy.

Well, on the greek flag, there are two colors, Blue and White. However, there is no law regulating what shade of blue should be used and you can find flags ranging from very light to very dark blue.

The nine stripes are said to represent the number of syllables in the Greek phrase "Eleutheria H Thanatos", usually translated as "Freedom or Death!", a battle cry during the revolt against the Ottoman Occupation.

The equal-armed cross represents the Greek Orthodox church, the predominant religion of Greece. The Church played a crucial role in the fight for independence against the Ottomans.

The color blue represents the sea which is so important to Greece and such a major portion of its economy. The white represents the waves on the ocean. Blue has also always been a color of protection, seen in the blue eye amulets used to ward off evil, and white is seen as the color of purity.

As in Greek mythology, there are always other versions and explanations. Some say the nine stripes on the Greek flag represent the Nine Muses of Greek myth, and that the colors of blue and white represent Aphrodite rising up from the seafoam.
