Sanford Dole and Lorrin Thurston forced King Kalakaua to sign a new constitution radically restructuring the Hawaiian government. The so-called “Bayonet Constitution” sharply restricted the powers of the monarchy and limited suffrage to property owners, which had the effect of disenfranchising most Native Hawaiians.

Lorrin Andrews Thurston was a lawyer and newspaper publisher. His parents were missionaries in Hawaii. He was a leader of the revolution that overthrew Queen Liliuokalani and drafted the constitution for the provisional Hawaiian government. He headed the commission to Washington that negotiated for the annexation of Hawaii to the US. He retired after the annexation.
The Committee of Safety was the "Cover Name" for the group that proposed the annexation of Hawaii and while in theory not a member, it was led and directed by the Publisher of the Honolulu Advertiser, Lorrin A.
