The taking of the Dutch New Amsterdam colony by the Duke of York cannot be under estimated. New England had already formed a confederation uniting for external purposes the English colonies north and east of the Hudson River. Without the Duke of York's takeover of New Amsterdam, English colonial rule would remain split in two parts. The New England area would be cut off from the English holdings in Virginia and Maryland.
