Why is the United Kingdom important?

The British Empire no longer exists. It came to an end during the late 1940's and 1950's. About 50 of the old members of the British Empire are now independent countries within the Commonwealth of Nations.

ok I don't understand how the United Kingdom is important so that's why I looked it up I've looked up why several countries are important and they have given me a blank page. :)
