You can be issued batons or even lethal weapons while on security detail, if it is deemed appropriate to do such. If batons are not being issued for the detail, it was probably seen as unnecessary. If you feel that it's pertinent to carry one, you need to make your case to the NCOIC of that detail.

Well, I can tell you this much, I have been living in the Commonwealth for my entire life and I will tell you its very risky. I’m not sure off the top of my head but I read the Virginia laws regarding weapons, quite some years ago. Expandable Batons, Brass Knuckles, Butterfly Knives, Throwing Cards/Knives are all basically under the deadly weapons list. I had a friend in 2006 who was caught with brass knuckles, he didn’t receive a” possession of a deadly weapons charge”, but instead “Possession of brass knuckles?” In Virginia it seems they just make the up laws year after year. Id say sure if It makes you feel safer, carry it. Just don’t get caught.
According to law on weapons (§ 4 stk. 2) it could be interpreted that they are illegal, however it is not completely clear since the definition is a little weak.

The type of weapons a security guard should carry depends on their specific role, the environment they operate in, and the legal regulations of the area. Non-lethal options, such as pepper spray or batons, are often preferred for general security duties, while armed guards may carry firearms if they are properly trained and licensed. Ultimately, the choice of weapon should prioritize safety, de-escalation, and adherence to laws and company policies. Regular training and clear protocols are essential for effective and responsible weapon use.

Friction batons require manual extension by pulling them out, while spring-loaded batons use a spring mechanism for automatic extension with the push of a button. Friction batons are more prone to user error and may require more force to extend, while spring-loaded batons offer quicker deployment and can be easier to handle in high-pressure situations.
