This model was formed in 1976 by Westley and MacLean. The advantages are that it can account for different modes of communication, i.e, it accounts for both interpersonal and mass media oriented communication. It accounts for feedbacks. It is a predictive, heuristic model of communication and is very descriptive. It isolates the different dimensions of the communication process. This model also accounts for non-binary interactions. This means that it will hold good even for communications involving more than two sources.

The only disadvantage is that despite its descriptive nature, this model is two dimensional and can't account for typical communication events that involve a broader context and a wider range of communication messages. However, there are limitations to almost all models of communication and Westley and MacLean have provided a pretty comprehensive model as far as the working of a typical media organization or institute is concerned.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of westley-mclean model of communication?

The Westley-MacLean model of communication offers advantages such as its recognition of the complex and iterative nature of communication, allowing for feedback loops and multiple sources of influence. It emphasizes the role of media and intermediaries in shaping messages, which is relevant in today’s media landscape. However, its complexity can also be a disadvantage, as it may be difficult to apply practically or to analyze communication processes clearly. Additionally, its focus on mass communication might overlook the nuances of interpersonal communication.

Who give gatekeeper theory of mass communication?

Actually, this theory was around as early as 1922, when Walter Lippmann wrote his famous book "Public Opinion." At that time, the theory did not have a name, however. It acquired a name in the early 1940s, based on research by social psychologist Kurt Lewin. In the early 1950s, two theorists named Bruce Westley and Malcolm S. MacLean Jr. developed further research about gatekeepers and their role in mass communication-- their study was an expansion of earlier research (1948) done by Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver, who looked at how messages are disseminated to the public. Westley and MacLean were perhaps the first theorists to look at the role of the editor in which messages are included in a newscast and which are not.
