Johnson stood before Congress on 27 November 1963, five days after Kennedy's assassination, and began his speech by saying: ``All I have I would have given gladly not to be standing here today. The greatest leader of our time has been struck down by the foulest deed of our time."
Johnson declared that Kennedy ``lives on in the immortal words and works and works that he left behind.'' Johnson then called for Congress to write into law the policy ambitions of the murdered U.S. leader: social programs to create jobs, improve education and care for the elderly, for space exploration, for the Peace Corps ``and above all, the dream of equal rights for all Americans, whatever their race or color.''
