Each state differs in their requirements for Massage Therapy. Some states have no requirements, like California. In California in most places they have county requirements and you must register with the vice squad. others states require a certain amount of class hours and to pass a test.

There are 3 possible test that can be taken: the national boards, the Federation Test, or the states own test.

As of now there isn't one test that can help you to be "nationally certified" like a doctor. The best thing to do is to contact the state you would like to practice in and get the information for the source.

Some states that have their own test are Ohio and New York. Other states like Washington you need 800 hours and the pass either the Federation or the National Boards.

In Oregon they require a certain amount of hours and only accept the Federation Test.

To become a Massage Therapist is a really rewarding career but to get licensed is hard work :D

It appears that most states require fingerprinting for a massage therapy license. To find out for sure if your state requires it, contact the Board of Health.

Does Medicaid cover massage therapy?

At this point medicare does not cover massage therapy (part A). Some of the supplemental plans (part B and C) do cover massage therapy. You would need to check with your provider to see if they cover "massage therapy provided by a licensed massage therapist." Insurance companies do not make decisions based on type of massage but perhaps who is performing it. Sometimes physical therapists' and chiropractors' massages may be covered and a massage therapist's may not be covered. But yes it depends on which part of medicare you are talking about. Supplemental medicare plans may cover massage therapy (and deep tissue massage therapy).
