Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Red Scare in America intensified after Hungary briefly established a Communist regime under Béla Kun in 1919 and after the rise of the Bolsheviks in Russia. Additionally, Germany experienced significant revolutionary activity during the same period, with the Spartacist uprising in 1919 aiming to establish a socialist state. These events heightened fears of a global Communist revolution, contributing to widespread anxiety and paranoia in the United States.
Communism. NSC-68 This document assumed that we were losing the Cold War and assumed there was something called a monolithic communist threat which assumed that all communists were like Stalin. It also said that the US must fight communism everywhere. In order to prepare for WWIII predicted for 1954, we needed to build up our military on a massive scale. They were afraid of the domino theory, that if one nation fell to communism al nations surrounding would too.
American feared Communist because the communists wanted to turn the U.S. democracy into a communist country and they are going to try to overthrow the government.
During the Cold War, the United States focused on protecting countries such as South Korea, Vietnam, and various nations in Latin America, including Cuba and Nicaragua, from the spread of communism. The U.S. engaged in military intervention, political support, and economic aid to counter communist movements and influence in these regions. The overarching goal was to contain communism and prevent its expansion, which was seen as a direct threat to democratic governance and U.S. interests globally.

In their eyes communism was EVIL. (With Stalin that was true.) They felt they must help the European nations and African nations get repaired and restored to good strong economies so they could fend off the communists. There plans and ideas did help the Europeans.
Communism has never existed, whether in Eastern Europe or elsewhere. Communism is a global society with no countries or rulers or classes or money. What existed in Eastern Europe was state capitalism.
Other than the nations that were swallowed up by the steam-rolling Soviet war machine during their advance thru Europe and Asia against the Axis powers in 1945; and the Red Chinese revolution of 1949; and possibly some covert third world nations (Cuba, Laos, etc.) that were not strategically important enough for the US to go to war over...the US sponsored REPUBLIC of South Vietnam was the only one.

There is a group that est. in America in 1919 called CPUSA and they are still extant today, though mostly underground. They were attacked by FBI and State officials of Chicago and so that's why there is a fright of Communism in America today. It's quite sad. There may be people or organizations that may call themselves "communist" however their existence is hardly worth a mention. With the collapse of Soviet "communism" this false ideology was proven to be what it was: a threat to free nations everywhere. Even the "communism" of China has moved to a degree towards free market policies.
America realized that it was generally the poorer, less well off countries that turned to communism. So by creating the marshall plan, not only is america gaining european allies, but also reducing the number of poor nations and giving the remaining poor an alternative to communism, thus stopping its spread and containing it.
